About 30 people attended a public meeting June 13 to see the conceptual parkland plan prepared by O'Brien and Asso- ciates, landscape architects from Port Perry. The conceptual plan calls for extensive changes and im- provements to the long ribbon of public parkland that stretches from Water Street in the south to Beech Street in the north. And while new playground equipment will be put up this summer at the Palmer Park beach area, Scugog Mayor Ho- ward Hall told the meeting there is no overall timetable to implement the changes pro- osed. In Palmer Park, the plans calls for a boardwalk to be built along the shoreline with an ob- servation deck jutting into the lake. The plan also suggests that eventually, there should a walk- way linking the entire water- front from south to north. The plan calls for day boat slips to be built at the govern- ment pier, improvements to the lands north of the boat launch- ing ramp, clearly defined access areas into the parklands, and the eventual removal of the two baseball diamonds on Water Street. The latter will not happen overnight, said Mayor Hall, as moving baseball diamonds is tied directly to whether the Township develops recreational land near the Scugog Arena on Durham Road 8. Generally, the changes suggested by the consultants were received favourably at the meeting June 13, but like every- thing else, they will depend on the Township's ability to fi- nance them. There was one suggestion from the floor that the Town- ship might consider asking for donations from the public and the corporate sector as one way of paying for the improvements.
