a SES Team reaches semi final in Oshawa Easton tournament Gamblers still to The first one third of the Oshawa City and District Fastball season is history and the Green- bank Gamblers are clinging to a slim three point lead over the Oshawa Merchants, who have played two games less than Greenbank. Unlike last year when the Gamblers came fast out of the gate to take a quick lead in league standings and from which they never lost the lead. The 1989 league is tightly bunched and teams are constantly trading positions in the league standings. Port Perry and Stouffville are tied for third spot with the Oshawa Juniors only a couple of points behind. Greenbank played twice last week and had a win and a loss for their efforts. On Monday night in Greenbank Park the Richmond Hill "Hy and Zels" team edged the Gamblers by a 2-0 score as the Richmond Hill teams continued their winning ways in the in- terlocking schedule. Richmond Hill pitetrer Mark Bendahan was a "one man"' show for Hy & Zels as he pitched and batted his team to the 2-0 victory. Benadahan batted in both Rich- Rod Real of the G reenbank Gamblers could not quite beat the throw on this play during game Saturday against Richmond Hill in the Easton tournament in Oshawa. Gam- blers lost this one 1-0, but came back to advance to the tour- nament semi-finals. See article for details on the Gambler fortunes on the fastball circuit last week. Brian Till, Don Beaton, Mark - Goreski and George Redshaw were the only Gamblers to hit safely against Bendahan. Mark Goreski on the Gambler mound turned in an excellent ef- fort as he allowed only three hits (two to Bendahan), walked one and struck out seven. The low pro- ductivity of the Gambler bats have let well pitched games get away from them and turn wins in- to losses so far this season. However, it should only be a mat- ter of time until the Gambler hit- ters find their batting eye, as there are too many proven hitters on the Gambler team for the slump to continue. On Thursday night in Oshawa, Greenbank met the Oshawa Mer- chants in a battle for top spot in the league and the Gamblers came home with a 7-2 victory. The story in this game was Ken Goreski making his first start of the season and the veteran southpaw was in complete com- mand as he tossed a nifty five hit- ter tolead the Gamblers into first place. Goreski struck out five and did not issue any walks and all the hits he allowed were singles. Greenbank collected ten hits during the game with Brian Till and Mark Goreski each having a pair and Don Phinney, Don Beaton, Terry Till, Trevor Till, Paul Goreski and Fred Cockerton each with one safety. Steve Crummy took the loss for Oshawa while catcher Jim Crum- my had two of the Oshawa hits. On the weekend the Gamblers competed in the Geordie Easton Tournament at Durham Fields and lost out in the semi final to Stouffville Betz Pools. The pitching and defense of the Gamblers was again top rate but ~ the absence of timely hits proved tobe their downfall. One exception was Don Beaton who had an outstanding tourna- ment with the bat including a pair nament with two losses in division competl- p by three points of long homeruns. Mark Goreski and Russ Korbak supplied excellent pitching for the Gamblers and they executed at least a half dozen double plays during the tournament. This week sees the Port Perry Eagles in Greenbank on Monday night and the Gamblers travel to Bradford on Tuesday and to Stouffville on Wednesday. Then on Sunday (June 25) Stouffville meets Greenbank at 2:00 p.m. in Greenbank Park and the follow- ing night Richmond Hill U.I.C. are the visitors. The Gamblers next tournament will be in Buffalo N.Y. on the long weekend of July 1. Additions to the Gambler team are Dave Bacon and John Jeffs, both performed well during the past week.
