Speaking in the Commons on June 13, Mr. Stevenson called the brief presented to VIA by the Passenger Associa- tion "realistic," and said it was "an outstanding public-spirited initiative by these passengers to keep the Toronto-Havelock line open." He asked that the propo- sals in the brief "receive the de- tailed consideration that they warrant." Mr. Stevenson noted that the Toronto-Havelock line and Quebec-Windsor corridor are the two train services identified by VIA as "the two lines that come closest to paying for them- selves." The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has expressed interest in the idea and has asked the committee to expand the proposal into a complete business plan which could be evaluated by the Ministry. Possible grants from the Ministry to develop a feasibility study of this purchase were dis- cussed. The Town of Lindsay has passed a motion endorsing the efforts of their committee. Among the cost saving sug- gestions for the line, the Pas- senger Association has suggest- ed cutting the Peterborough- Havelock stretch, except for peak times. This is a distance of Just over 50 km, or about one- third of the total run.
