Beacock Picnic was Magic Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly On Friday evening the annual Blackstock District Girl Guide Banquet and Awards Ceremony was held using as its theme the 100th Birthday of Lady Baden- Powell. Following a warm welcome to the 150 girls, parents and guests assembled by District Commissioner Swain the Toast to the Queen and Canada was pro- posed by Guider P. Waters. Following the singing of O Canada and introduction of Head Table Mrs. S.- Goulding proposed the Toast to the Guide Movement which was replied to by Jill Van Camp. Pathfinder Chantal Belanger proposed the Toast to the Mothers to which Mrs. H. McLaughlin replied. Mrs. Anita Davis said Grace and a delicious chicken dinner was enjoyed. Brown Owl Malcolm extended the customary thank you to the Caterers and Brown Owl Obstfeld thanked the Banquet Committee which was Barb Byers, Vivian Campbell, Gail Johns, Lucy Bucking, Judy Westall and Marilyn Green, Door prizes were won by Barb Byers, Alison Malcolm and Marg Belanger. Everyone then march- ed to the United Church where the Awards Ceremony was held. The Processional Hymn was followed by the Presentation of the Colours and the welcome by Rev. D. Davis. The first part of the ceremony included a resume of the Year's events presentation of service stars and inspection awards. Lisa Bucking, Shauna Hassall, Jenna Hendry, Leslie Lamb, Jada MacLeod, Lisa Nesbitt, Michelle Wylie from Blackstock Brownies and from Caesarea Brownies Avril Walker all flew up to Guides. Similarily the Guides reviewed the events of the year. Two girls, Heather Goulding and 'Heather Malcolm received their All-round Cords with presenta- tions by Units, Guide Company, District Divisicn and Parents. These two girls also flew up to Pathfinders. ~The Pathfinder group gave their review followed by the Rangers reports. The St. John Ambulance certificates were also presented. Rev. C. Bull and Rev. D. Davis resented the Religion and Life Emblems aftger which Mrs. Arlene Malcolm and Mrs. Pat Obstfeld received their 5 year Ser- vice Bars. Mrs. Shirley Turner was presented with her 30 year Service Bar. Appreciation gifts were given to Mrs. Sue Gainey and Mrs. Rosie Hassall retiring leaders from Brownies and to Mrs. Louise Swain retiring Cookie Convenor. ~ Division Commissioner Allan of Lindsay gave closing remarks. The evening concluded with . Benediction by Rev. C. Bull and the singing of Taps. Congratulations to Dave and Debbie Horton on the arrival of a new baby girl. The Blackstock United Church Strawberry supper will be held this Saturday, June 24. Tickets will be available at the door. A good crowd attended and enjoyed the good food and excellent fellowship. A magician entertained the children during the day. Mrs. Elsie Hooey of Canata spent several days with Mrs. Marion Hodge and Tommy last week. Mrs. Hooey had attended the Decoration Services last ,sunday. Kathleen and Albert Watts were recent dinner guests of her aunt and uncle Bertha and Harry McLaughlin. Also present were Mr. & Mrs. Walker from the west who are cousins on the Pollen Side. The Walkers are parents of eleven grown-up daughters. On Decoration Sunday Joyce Taylor entertained evening din- ner guests. Anson and Irene Taylor of Scarborough and Kathleen and Albert Watts were guests, A number from here called at the funeral home in Bobcaygeon to pay respects to Wm. Kelly, Gerald Kelly's father. Ann and Leslie Taylor were re- cent dinner guests at the home of Kathleen and Albert Watts. W.1. Report The June meeting was in the evening, June 15 with visiting W.1. members from Nestleton and Shirley. The meeting opened by singing the Ode and repeating the Mary Stewart Collect. Our president Jean Adams welcomed everyone. Dora Martyn, convener for In- ternational Affairs introduced Shirley Turner who showed pic- tures on Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and communist China. Roy and Shirley were on a tour in Oc- tober. To show they were travell- ing first class they had chandeliers in the buses. Only the rich can afford a house to live in. When one dies in Tokyo they are cremated and the ashes placed in a small jar and placed in a hole in a pillar owned by the family and used for generations. It is very costly to have a wed- ding and all except the bride wear . black. There is Kentucky Fried Chicken and Michael Jackson music. Business, industry and housing are all mixed up. They have hot springs and grow three crops of rice a year. In Hong Kong there are high rises where the boat péople can rent 1 room when there are too many people to live on the boat. + You can only get to China through Macaw, a Portugal city that raises money from gambling. In China you can see only what the Communists want you to see, nothing more. They have a city built for tourists. For intermission we had lunch and a social time.
