GM donates car to High School When students in the auto- motive department return to class at PPHS next fall, they will find something different waiting for them. Thanks to General Motors Canada, the students will have a new 1990 Sprint to poke and prod in their courses of study. The gleaming white Sprint was turned over to PPHS princi- pal Ted Morrison and teacher Stan LeFort last week by Gor- don Duda, a resident of Port Perry who "works in product en- gineering for GM in Oshawa. " Mr. LeFort said of parti- cualr interest to the students will be the three-cylinder mo- tor, as this is the first car the shcool has had with such an en- gine. The car will be used as a teaching tool, and eventually it will be taken apart piece by piece so students can get a close-up look at all the parts. Actually, the students at PPHS aren't the only people to give this particular Sprint a thorough going over. NEED PHOTOCOPIES? We can do them for you! - Letter, Legal & Ledger. Reduced & Enlarged. PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 The vehicle was manufac- tured in Japan through a joint venture between General Mo- tors and Suzuki, and the model is slated to go into production this fall at a new plant in Inger- soll, Ontario. For the last several months, this car has been the subject of some thorough in- specting and testing by GM en- gineers and technicians, includ- ing cold weather evaluation in northern Ontario when the mercury dipped to 35 below. Now that General Motors is finished with its testing, the car is "de-commissioned." Since it can't be licenced for sale, the company turned it over to the school. This is a common practise " by GM. In fact, PPHS over the years has received half a dozen vehicles for study, and GM ships others to schools all over Durham Region and Canada. As part of the donation to PPHS, Dennis Anderson Chev Olds in Port Perry has agreed to supply a set of manuals, and will arrange for a technician to provide 20 hours of free lecture and instruction time to the stu- dents. Mr. LeFort, who is retiring as a teacher at the end of the present school year, said PPHS has about 80 students studying automotive in grades nine through 12. He was very pleased to re- ceive the donation of the Sprint, and said it will be a great teach- ing tool for his successor Roger Harrison.
