Curfew endorsed for snowmobiles A 1:00 AM curfew on snow- mobiles in Port Perry and Prince Albert has been en- dorsed by council for a new snowmobile by-law in Scugog Township. The new by-law is now be- ing prepared and is expected to be passed an in force before a new snowmobile season starts late this year. And in disenseing the 1:00 AM curfew for Port Perry and Prince Albert Monday after- noon, members of council made it clear that the curfew could be extended to other built-up areas in the Township, if complaints about late night snowmobiles start reaching the municipal of- fice. Council also proposes to give special powers to designat- ed members of local snowmobile clubs in the Township to act as enforcement officers under the direction of the municipal by- law officer. And in Port Perry, the new by-law will ban snowmobiles from Queen Street, although riders will be permitted to cross Queen at right angles. However, the suggestion earlier this year that the ma- chines be banned totally from all streets in Port Perry and Prince Albert has been dropped and won't be part of the new by- law. The threat of a ban in the two communities proved un- popular with many snowmobil- ers when it was first proposed several weeks ago. Snowmobilers objected to this suggestion on the grounds they would have to trailer their machines the short distance from their homes in the commu- nity to get to the lake or the trail system. Township council remains very concerned about snowmo- bile use near the schools in Port Perry, and the council will ask the Board of Education to post no snowmobile signs at the en- trance to school properties.
