TT: RR a LI 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 27, 1989 Lake Scugog Is perfect Local rowing club is on the way by Rob Streich When Charlotte Hale was growing up, one of her favorite songs was "Row,row, row your boat." Things haven't changed much, although now, instead of just singing about it, she hopes to be taking part init, and help- ing others learn to enjoy it as well. Following a short article in "The Star" on rowing several weeks ago, Mrs. Hale received a half dozen interested phone calls. This weekend, she ar- ranged to bring those interest- ed parties together with rowing equipment she had arranged to borrow in order that they may try their hands at it. This sort of learn to row' session is how Mrs. Hale be- came involved with sport ini- tially. Eight years ago she learned at the prestigious Ar- gonauts rowing clubin Toronto. When she lived in Western Canada, she was committed to maintain her interest and to- gether with several other en- thusiasts, she was instrumen- tal in forming a Banff rowing club. The first thing she was quick to point out, was that this type of rowing is not what most people think of; a short, fat lit- tle boats with heavy oars that . you need to throw your back into. Rather, these are sleek, light-weight human-powered racing boats. She assured me that her small stature did not prevent her from making good time on the water. "These boats have sliding seats. You end up doing 80 per cent of the work with your legs not with your upper body. "It's not just get out there and row - there is skill involved and you have to keep your bal- ance," she explained. With a variety of crafts from singles and doubles to eight-person boats, a lot of care need be tak- en to coordinate all the rowers. While Charlotte rows for recreation primarily, she would welcome members interested in training for competitive row- ing, especially at the university level. Somewhere down the road, she hopes to have the op- portunity to do some coaching. Mrs. Hale has been living on Scugog Island for a little over a year, and missing one of the activities she used to love to enjoy - rowing. With three little ones, she has a handful to watch over but the sport is addictive, and she thinks Lake Scugog is per- fect forit. She hopes that the Scugog Rowing Club will be able to host regattas on Lake Scugog. An Oshawa club is just forming they have expressed an interest to compete here-because their facilities (Darlington Provin- cial Park) are inadequate. Scott Withers, founder of the Oshawa Club(former founder of a club in Belleville) attended the learn to row' ses- sion and assisted in instructing beginners in the basics of oper- ating these fine machines. Charlotte is flexible about the functioning of the club, "it depends what the intent is," she explained. "I'd be willing to go out everyday if people want- ed to." Rowing is like jogging , she explained, some people swear by it, while it may not be for others. The only way to find out, is to go out and try it, and then decide ifit is your sport. What she is hoping for to begin with is a minimum of eight or ten keen people. "That will enable me to be sure that there will be interest enough to maintain it," she said. The club will of course need some equipment to operate. Last week- end she Invited anyone interested in the sport to come and try their hand at the challeng- ing and enjoyable form of exercise. A dozen people were out to watch the sleek boats and learn the simple skills, among them, several retired persons and several youths. Anyone Interested In helping out or joining should contact Charlotte at 985-0878. . For this weekend Paluski Boats in Peterborough is loan- ing her several small craft to teach with. She hopes that the club will eventually be able to pur- chase several small craft to use. "A double and a single would be nice to start with," she ex- plained. It is her experience that some members may want to purchase their own boats, espe- cially older, retired rowers who are seeking good recreation and exercise. Other clubs have had suc- cess with fund-raisers and have received sponsorship from businesses. She hopes to do the same. Additionally, the Ontario Rowing Association provides grants and subsidies to help lo- cal clubs get started. ~~ "When we get the club off the ground, we have been prom- ised storage space at the old ca- noe club." "Maybe a year down the road, we can start a tradition with a rowing regatta on Lake Scugog. Maybe during festival days as rowing is a British in- stitution." Rowing is a recommended alternative to winter sports like cross country skiing. A great many people use rowing to keep their skiing shape during the summer because it uses many of the same muscles in a strong aerobic workout.
