The MoJacks stretched their undefeated string to thirteen (13) games as they won their second tournament of the year. The local boys had very little trouble in their first two games as they blasted the host team from Gravenhurst 23-2 and defeated East Gwillumbury 16-0. Jeff Card picked up the win in the opener as he allowed only 2 hits and struck out 11 batters in this five inning "mercy-rule" vic- tory. Chad Venning picked up the vic- tory in game two as he shut-out East Gwillumbury on four hits in another '"'mercy-rule" game. In game three Gavin Cochrane held Markham to a single run as the "MoJacks" scored five times in the fifth inning to break open a tight pitchers dual between Gavin and Pat Western of Markham. This win put the team into the Championship game. After a long delay of two hours the "MoJacks" again faced Markham who had advanced via the losses side on the double- knock out tournament. This game, played under the lights and in the cool Gravenhurst night air, proved no contest as the boys from Port Perry won the game and the championship 9-2. Chad Venning picked up the win, allowing 3 hits and 10 strike outs. The MoJacks again showed what a strong softball club they are as Gavin Cochrane, Chad Venning, and Jeff Card gave them a pitching staff second to Jr. C Hockey League cut to seven teams The Central Ontario Jun- ior C Hockey League has been reduced from 11 teams to seven, a move hailed by Murray Par- liament, general manager of the Port Perry MoJacks. "It's a break for the better," he told the Star last week. "It is going to help create some great rivalries among the seven teams." At a meeting earlier this month, officials from the Cen- tral League teams voted to put former teams Wellington, Ma- doc and Trenton in a newly formed Bay of Quinte League, along with new clubs in Napan- ee, Godfrey and Ernestown. The seven teams that will make up the Central League this fall are Port Perry Mo- Jacks, Little Britain Mer- chants, Uxbridge Bruins, Lake- field Chiefs, Ajax Axemen, Cobourg Cougers and Bowman- ville Eagles. . The Lindsay Muskies have withdrawn from C hockey for the fall to enter in the Junior B League. Although the schedule has not yet been drawn up, it is like- ly to be 36 games with each team playing three at home and three away with the other six. Mr. Parliament said the MoJack organization would- save in excess of $2,000 by not having to make the six long road trips to Wellington, Madoc and Trenton. "Junior C hockey has come to the point where we have to put some sense into the finan- cial picture. We just can't afford those long road trips," he said. And he added that finances has become such a problem for some clubs, there was a good chance that one or two would drop out of the league unless the travel costs were reduced. He also noted that teams like Madoc and Trenton are poor gate draws when they play at the Scugog Arena, which hurts the clubfinancially as well. There was opposition to the re-alignment from officials with the Wellington Duke club, part- ly because of the Napanee entry in the Quinte League. Welling- ton over the past couple of years has drawn hockey players from the Napanee area. But he said that officials from the seven clubs that re- main in the Central Loop are over-joyed with the changes. With seven teams, the playoff format likely will mean that just six make the first round of playoffs. Mr. Parliament said the new league format of seven teams will make for better, more exciting Junior C hockey, especially with the potential to really develop some inter-club rivalries that will bring fans to the arenas. With coaches Ken Harman and Garnet Warriner agreeing to return to the bench this com- ing season, Mr. Parliament said the MoJack organization is looking forward to the start of training camp and the Junior C season this fall. Todd Smart is proving once again this year his versatility and ability as he plays all three infield positions and also takes a turn in left field. He also bats lead-off in the order and averages a walk a game plus his share of hits. The outfield is led by Simon Traynor in centre field and bat- ting fourth in the line-up with Chad Kearns, Stephen Parish, Kent Jamieson and Scott Wylie when he returns from a broken arm, this group displays plenty of speed to run down the long fly ball and all are proven hitters at the plate.
