Gamblers defeat Eagles 4-2 in Mens fastball The Greenbank Gamblers were scheduled to play four games this week but the rain eliminated a game in Bradford on Tuesday night. However on Monday night in Greenbank Park the Gamblers met the XL Eagles from Port Perry and pulled out a 4-2 win as they came from behind in the bot- tom of the sixth inning. Greenbank scored first in the fifth inning as Dennis Ewart singled and Terry Till pinch ran for Ewart and came around to score on a passed ball. Ken Goreski had pitched five scoreless innings for the Gamblers and was relieved by Russ Korbak in the sixth. Port Perry beat out a pair of infield hits and then scored on singles by Jay Williams and Doug Christie to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth inn- ing, Greenbank came roaring back as Brian Till opened the in- ning with a triple and scored the tieing run on Paul Goreskis single. Then with two out Don Beaton belted a long home run to give Greenbank a 4-2 lead. Russ Korbak set the Eagles down in order in the seventh and the Gamblers fans went home happy. Seven different Gamblers pick- ed up hits during the game with Dave Bacon, Mark Goreski, Brian Till, Paul Goreski, John Jeffs, and Dennis Ewart assisting Don Beaton with the Greenbank attack. Dave Dickson and Jay Williams each had two hits for Port Perry with Jeff Bricknell and Doug Christie claiming one hit each. Wednesday night saw the Greenbank team in Stouffville to meet the Betz Pools boys and Russ Korbak tossed a nifty four hit shut-out as the Gamblers edg- ed Stouffville by a 2-0 score. Hits were scarce in this game as Greenbank only had five hits during the contest. Brian Till led the attack with a pair of hits with Rodd Real, Terry Till and Paul Goreski having the other safeties for the Gamblers. On Sunday afternoon in Green- pank Park on what must surely have been the hottest day of the year, the Gamblers hosted a return visit from Stouffville and another Greenbank win would have given them some breathing Dace at the top of the league; but this was not to be as Daryl Mox- loy pitched Stouffville to an extra inning 2-1 win over the Greenbank team. Ken Goreski started on the Greenbank mound and pitched two scoreless innings. Mark Goreski came on in the third and gave up a run on back to back singles by Chris Jones and Mark Joslin after two were out. Greenbank tied the game in the fifth when John Jeffs singled to centre, was sacrificed to second by Fred Cockerton and eventual- 3 scored on Don Phinneys infield it. The Gamblers missed a glorious opportunity to win the game in the sixth when Rodd Real led off the inning with a triple. Brian Till, the next batter lined a vicious shot to left that the third baseman snagged and tagged Real who was a couple of steps off the bag. Russ Korbak relieved Mark Goreski in the sixth and breezed through until the eighth inning but in the top of the ninth Stouffville pushed a run across to take a 2-1 lead. Darryl Moxley went the distance for Stouffville with Ken Goreski, Mark Goreski and Russ Korbak each tossing three innings for Greenbank. John Jeffs led the Gambler hit- ters with a pair of hits with Terry Till, Trevor Till, Rodd Real, Paul Goreski and Don Phinney adding singles. The Gamblers are off to Buffalo on the long July first weekend for an International Tournament with teams from the U.S.A. and Canada. Lots of hits in this one On June 19, Valu-Mart and Seagrave had a fun game against each other with Valu-Mart taking the win 21-11. Todd Mitchell played a good solid game along with Jamie Page and Jeffrey Piersma who both hit 4 for 4 for Valu-Mart., Chris Elaschuk also hit extreme- ly well. ~ Seagrave saw Josh Jonah play a good defensive game. 'Tara Jackson and Jonathan Ashmore played well and each had a few good strong heavy hits. Homestead wins Homestead Furniture Mosquito Girls soccer team travelled to Ajax on June 22 and came home with a 4-0 win. The first half was scoreless with our girls controlling the play from the start but couldn't score on the Ajax goalie. In the second half our girls kept the pressure on and Shauna Cor- nish scored at the five minute mark to make it 1-0. Kelly Phipps scored 3 goals - a "hat-trick" to make the score 4-0. A strong game was turned in by Shannon MacDonald, Lisa Dodd, Julie Ball, Heather Bredin & Aimee Jolicoeur. Sara Cosway & Sarah Coyne shared the goalten- ding duties and earned the shut- out. The Homestead girls are still undefeated after their first five games and are in first place with 10 points. Next game in Whitby on Thursday night. Junior soccer This year is the first year for "junior" soccer in Port Perry. Previously, 17and 18 yr. olds had to travel outside of Port Perry to play organized league soccer, but this year coach Ken Huggins and the Scugog Youth Soccer Club have managed to find enough guys for a team. The sponsor, Mary-Ann Martin of Re/Max, was generous enough to supply the uniforms for' the team: They play in a league that includes teams from Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Orono, Bowmanville and elswhere. In the few games the team has layed so far, the competition has Pn tough and the level of soccer usually very high. The team's game nights are Tuesdays and their next home game is on Tues- day, July 4up at soccer fields. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
