- EE ane Senior Citizens apartments Another hurdle for plan The Senior Citizen's Apart- ment complex proposed for Ash Street (behind Immaculate Conception Church) ran into yet another obstacle Monday morning at a meeting of Scugog Township council, The 38 unit senior's resi- dence is already faced with an Ontario Municipal Board hear- - ing, scheduled for August -28, 1989, and now Scugog Town- ship is throwing another hurdle initsway, ~~ Infact, Rllowing anthour and a half meeting wit i Yepresenta- tives of Roman Catholic Episco- . ° pal Corp.,. the R.C, 'Separate: ~. learned that the Separate ool Board, the Aréhdioceses: solicitors and -the planners, council sent a message to Dur- ham Land Division. stating theirrecommendations, = = Their comments, which were weed spray Scugog's road superinten- dent Ronn MacDonald in- formed council Monday morn- ing that approval has been received to spray the aquatic yeeds along Port Perry's lake- nt The weed situation along the lakefront is extremely bad at the moment, and sometime this week a contractor will be hired 'tospray. «i Swimming in Lake Scugog is : -not recommended for about 48 hours after the spraying and 1 signs warning the public will be posted around the swimming 'area. i Parents are asked to warn theif children to stay out of the water, no matter how hot it gets, once the signs have been posted, . a . telephoned to the Region Mon- day morning in time for a 1:00 p.m. land division hearing, asked that the Land Division Committee table any decision on the proposed exchange of lands until after the O.M.B. has made a decision. Council went on to recom- mend that if Land Division de- cided to make a decision, that the property which is presently used for parking remain desig- nated as parking (not play- ground 'as proposed), and that -'nobuildings (such as portables; should be erected ont Two weeks ago, e parcel. council School Board and the Catholic Church were going to apply to exchange pieces of property. The School would give up a piece of land at .the south-east of their property for the Sen- ior's residence, and the Church would transfer ownership of a piece of the parking lot to the School for use as playground. It was the exchange of a piece of parking lot for playground that surprised council, and they asked that representa- tives from the Church and the School come to council to clarify their plans. After explaining the ex- change of lands by representa- tives of the Church and the School, council was still op- posed to the proposal. Councillor Marilyn Pearce posed some of the strongest ob- Jjections to the exchange saying that there is already conjestion behind the Church and by * cutting the parking lot in half with » fence, it would only 'make the matter worse. "The school is growing, the staff is growing and the church is growing, and now you're pro- posing to take -away parking spaces" she said. _ Her comments were echoed by Councillor Yvonne Christie /z VNR COLT ~~ Create Your Own {Holy Zowie! Representatives of the Sen- iors residence tried to convince Council that the exchange of land would create no problem with the parking as the school would have use of the parcel during school hours, and the Church would use it on off hours (such as night and week- ends) They said that eight more parking spots at the front of the school have been approved for staff, so they were in fact gain- ingparkingspace. But Councillor Pearce main- tained that the situation will be going from one parking prob- lem, to what she perceives as three parking problems. By this she explained that all buildings, the school, the church and the seniors building will be short spaces for parking. She pointed out that the as- phalt that wasorignally intend- ed for playground use, has al- ready been used up by portable classrooms, so now they need more hardtop and they want to take it from the parkinglot. "There has been fighting and disagreement over parking be- tween the Church and School since day-one", councillor Pearce said.
