'Meeting, trip was de a.m. Mair's Berry Farm Strawberry picking season is _b b Streich A len b ite summer is really here is the start of the be icking season. 8 week, Erich Mair is opening his gate for the thou- sands of avid berry pickers to take the first step toward those delicious jams and pies. Mairs' farm is beginning to turn red with the first, sweet strawberries of the season. Mr. Mair explained that al- though the miserable weather over the last several weeks has pushed back the normal open- ing time, the next four weeks will bring bushels of fresh, large berries. The Mair farm has 11 acres of Strawberries and 6 acres of raspberries - enough to satisfy even the sweetest tooth. Through a system of staggered planting, one patch is just starting to ripen when another finishes. Mairs' boast of such POPU- pocket lar varieties as Veestar, Red- coat and Vesper strawberries. While the strawberries will be in full swing for this weekend, the raspberries are just ripening and should be ready for picking within two weeks. At the request of his cus- tomers, Mr. Mair has started a plot of Brandywine berries, not- ed for their ood jam qualities. They will ar fruit for the 1990 season. Everyone has their own fa- | vorite berry recipes, but Mr. Mair prefers them simply in a dish with a little sour cream or yogurt and a dash of sugar. A word of caution for berry pickers; the necessary gear is essential for a safe and enjoya- ble outing. Always wear cool clothing, and a wide brimmed hat. Remember to put oninsect repellant and suntan lotion if ou are susceptible to burning. ringing along a drink may not | be a bad idea if you intend to stay a while. Picking berries yourself is rewarding and helpful to the book compared to pay- ing full store prices. Itis also a good excuse to get outin the sun and fresh air and enjoy the sea- son and then enjoy desert a lit- tlelateron.
