er pe a en 50 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 27, 1989 Horticultural society rose show Wednesday Ashburn and Area News by Florence Ashton Brooklin Horticultural Soceity will hold their rose show and general meeting on Wednesday evening of this week at Brooklin United Church. This hot weather is really bringing the roses out fast, so it should be a good show. As well as 12 classes of roses, there is a good listing of other flower specimens, fruits and vegetables and decor classes to choose from in your show book. The programme at 8:00 p.m. will cover the many types and cultivars of peonies. Guest speaker will be John Simpkins, a past president of the American Peony Society, who lives in Oakville and is a fellow meniber of Garden Writers of America. He is also an active Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington. Looking ahead to Sunday, July 9th, Brooklin Horticulture are looking forward to visiting a group of gardens in the area. This will include gardens from Ashburn, Brooklin, and possibly Whitby and Oshawa. Each person on the tour is to purchase a map which will act as their ticket. Those may be purchased at Grass Park, Brooklin between 12 noon and 2 p.m, on Sunday July 9, or advance tickets may be made Ju- ly 1 to 8 through Video Image stores. Tour cost $5.00. You may start the tour at any point on the map. Juice and cookies will be en- joyed at an Ashburn garden. For all those who love a good game of euchre, join with your friends at Ashburn Community Centre on Thursday evening of this week at 8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Bernice Gardner and Florence Ashton attended the Summer Ral- ly of the Lindsay Presbyterial Womens Missionary Society at Beaverton. Also celebrating the 75th anniversary of the W.M.S. Western Division, 95 ladics gathered together in the after- noon at the Old Stone Church (east of Hwy. 12). What a beautiful, quaint old church, which will be celebrating the 150th anniversary in 1990. The din- ner and evening meeting was held at Beaverton Presbyterian Church. Our special speaker in the evening was Mrs. June, Stevenson, editor of Glad Tidings, our Monthly publication.
