He managed to jump clear of the truck as the tires caught fire. While attempting to kick sand onto the burning tires, an arc of electricity jumped to the steel toe of his work boots and he suffered burns to his foot. A police spokesman said he was fortunate to escape the inci- dent with fairly minor burns. Hit by pellets Two Toronto men had to have shot-gun pellets removed from their faces and chests Sun- day morning after they were ac- cidently shot at a pheasant farm in Scugog. Police say the two men were hunting with a group of friends at the pheasant farm just west of Seagrave. The two were apparently behind a knoll when they were hit by the pellets. Both were released from hospital the same day. Police say no charges were laid. Now, with far less traffic, and more room to roam, fate still seems to be conspiring against me enjoying myself. Every bicyclist knows that there are frequent little mishaps which are destined to happen. Things such as flat tires and oc- casional wipe outs are as common as spilt milk and zits. But | seem to be plagued with a host of unusual problems, For example, my bicycle seems to have a ghost - No, It's not El- vis - a mysterious entity shifts my derailleur at the most inappro- priate times - going from 2nd to 6th as I'm climbing a hill, BUMP. My bike was once a twelve speed, but this ghost lopsened the cable on my shifter and it pulled out - instant 8 speed. Then there was the time when | went on a run to Boman- ville from Blackstock. Earlier, | had contended with a water bot- tle which became loose and slid around upside down, and a dog which nibbled my ankles before 1 could pull my foot out of the toe clips. Then | discovered that my tire was a little low so | popped into a handy gas station and put a little air in it. In my urry, | neglected to realize that the garage was closed and the compressor turned off. My cycle tires take 90psi and | am al- ways cautious not to over inflate them with the imprecise pump. As | applied the nozzle to the valve and heard the familiar hiss | held only briefly. When | checked the tire, it was still low. | thought, "my goodness, it must have been lower than | real- ized," and proceeded to reapply it. Finally, when the Wag of the Sys was pushing the tire flat by itself, | realized that it would be a long lonely walk back some 25 kilometers to Black- stock, and of course It looked like it was going to rain. Thankfully, there was a station not far along the street with a functional compressor, and | was able to get on my way with the incentive of drizzle pushing me to great speeds. Of course as all cyclists know, even with a well-functioning machine, it is not all fun out on the highways trying to keep out | of harms way. Couch Potato cynics say why bother at all? There are a lot of drivers who are overcautious around cy- clists and vica versa, but the road is meant to be shared - bicy- cles were here first after all and thay dor demand that cars get off their roads. In China, the bicycle is the most common form of traffic and it is cars which have lesser rights. At the next sug- . gestion of an energy crisis consider cycling to work every day? | admit | get nervous around bicycles, but at least | appreciate the pleasure of propelling yourself along a distance and not putting anything nasty into the atmosphere but CO2 and sweat. And then there is the little known problem of a cycler's tan, a lovely toast brown colour on your back, neck, arms and legs - but a fishbelly-white stomach, underarms and underchin. In the end, it's tough enough trying to contend with high winds, insects, dogs and those long hills; the next time you see cyclists ahead, don't get frustrated because they make you slow down. Wait your turn to pass and give them a smile or a wave to show your appreciation of what they're trying to do - and what you aren't in your gas-guzzling, air conditioned health buster.
