Port Club holds Mixed Doubles tourney The Annual Mixed Doubles. Tennis Tournament was played over the long, hot weekend. Con- gratulations to the team of Beth Charles and Jay Neill who were victorious over Diane Burt and Tony Tenwesteneind, 6-2, 6-4. In the consolation round Sandra Adamcryck and Bob McCrae defeated Gale Ballard and Larry Adamcryck, 6-2, 6-4. You might say both games in the finals were 'a battle of the spouses' since both the consolation and cham- pionship rounds involved teams where a wife played against her husband and vica versa. Each participating member of the tournament had the oppor- tunity to vote for the Most Valuable Player during this two day event. The MVP for the Ladies was tied between Gale Ballard and Beth Charles (Tony's wife). Jay Neill cleanded up to be the MVP for the Men's Division. Congratulations to Gale, Beth and Jay - they played a lot of tennis in the extreme heat. Chris and Deby Noll, American friends of Gord and Allynne Jones, added some keen competition in the tournament. Eighteen teams signed up for this popular tournament, organiz- ed and run by Georgia Brock. Of these teams there were three teams of juniors, namely: Adam Johnston - Tashsa Vanderwyst; Quinn Sutherland - Jeff Murray and Kendra McCrae - Paul Lin- ton. These six juniors are all to be commended as they all played ex- tremely well - after all, these juniors are the Port Perry Tennis Club's up and coming champions. Canadian flags adorned the courts, the Gatorade thermos jug refilled many times and everyone enjoyed another batch of those sinfully delicious cookies baked by Joan Scott. Thanks to Bob and Ruth Burt of the Burrough for hosting another fun party - swim- ming, tennis, pot-luck dinner, socializing, and dancing AND fireworks - what more could one ask for at a party! In the Kawartha League Port Perry is tied for first place with Fenelon Falls followed by Peter- borough Quaker, Peterborough Nautilus and Lindsay Tennis Clubs in that order. The results of the Kawartha league games can be heard over the air on CKLY Radio, Lindsay, 910 on your dial | at 7 a.m. and 12 noon, the day following the games. Port Perry plays the Peterborough Nautilus club on Wednesday, July 12th in the Lift Lock City. In the Monday Night League, Joe Vanderwyst's team of Greg Hislam, Quinn Sutherland, Stephen Dabous, Judy Dekoning, Bob Burt, Heather McCrae, Cor- ry Greenwood and, of course, Joe, are in the lead with 13 points. There are 10 teams in this league. Games were cancelled over the weekend due to the holiday but resume again next week. The Junior Tennis Clinic begins next Monday with Diane Burt as our organizer, accompanied by Alex Pilepic (back again by popular demand!) of Whitby and club members, Jeff Murray and - Jay Neill. On the lighter side of tennis, 'Murphy's law, (in tennis) states that the chances of hitting a good return vary inversely with the number of people watching your match!' See you on the courts!
