Marlin Travel recorded their second win a 13-6 victory over Valu-Mart with solid hitting from Beau Jolicoeur, Brett Newell and a good defensive game from Laura Maddill. Steven Nagy had a good offen- sive game along with good defense from Jenifer Donnelly and Leanne Holt in a losing cause for Valu-Mart. On Tuesday, June 27 B & R Electric evened their record at 2-2-1 by beating Seagrave 16-7. It was an exciting game to watch as 5 different players hit homeruns. Joel Brown and Chris Wilehem had one each for Seagrave while Justin Kowalczyk, Michael Bent, and fara Vander Slagt did it for B & It was the consistent hitting of the whole team that won the game for B & R. On the strength of 21 hits and 8 walks, seven players got on base 3 times while another 4 did it twice. The Greenbank Mites extended their undefeated streak to seven games with consecutive victories At Corner Five by John "Wally" Nesbitt I've heard about Paris in the spring, but if it's anything like Montreal in June, I'm not interested. The Grand Prix Weekend introduced Canada's new cold and windy monsoon season but the weather did make for some ex- citing racing action at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. In the feature event, it was the familiar red and white McLaren cars that were fastest in qualifying, but mechanical ills felled both cars before race end. They were not alone in defeat, though, as only eight cars took the checkered flag. With the rain making driving conditions dangerous and reducing the visibility to near zero, it was Belgian Thierry Boutsen in a Williams-Rendult car who survived a mid-race spin and claim- ed his first ever Formula One victory. In the G.P. Weekend's supporting events, it was Quebec native Claude Bourbonnais claiming pole position for the For- mula Atlantic Race. Doing his best to impress any future For- mula One employers, Bourbonnais was by/far the fastest driver leading the race from the start until a faulty fuel pump forced him to retire with five laps left. Scott Goodyear of Toronto even- tually took the win after a race-long battle with Jocko Cunningham. Another Quebec native, Normand Boyer won the Honda Michelin Race and Ron Fellows took over the lead in the season point standings with a victory in the Players Ltd. G.M. Motorsport Race. The Grand Prix cars of today are technical masterpieces with their space age construction materials, their onboard com- puters and their airtunnel aerodynamics and all but if you want to see something really impressive take a trip to Shannonville . Motorsport Park on the 8th & 9th of July to the Vintage Racing Festival. The cars that will be competing there are all at least 25 years old and represent almost every make, model and type of car that ever turned a wheel in competition. Organized by the Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada (V.A.R.A.C.) the racers come from all over North America to compete and showcase their mobile history of Motorsport. Basically the cars are split into five different classes. The single seaters look like, for all intents and purposes, 'cigar tubes on wheels. Small, lightweight but surprisingly quick, these are true race cars with their 100 horsepower engines pushing them to speeds in excess of 130 miles per hour. You can expect to see lots of Lotus and Cooper cars in this class but keep an eye out for the Corvette powered and transmissionless Sadler Formula Ferocious and the Canadian built Dreosi Formula | Junior. (No computer trucks for the Dreosi Builders; it's rumoured they just drew the outline of the car on the garage floor with chalk and bent and welded the tube framework to fit the lines!!) The pre-war cars tend to grab the most attention. Ancient cars like the Frazer Nash, the Bugatti, the Hudson and a per- sonal favourite, the Twin Cylinder Morgan Super Sport 3. The last one has four wheels alright, but that includes the one the driver steers with! And these cars still race to speeds of 100 M.P.H.! If you were at Mosport for the tracks Inaugural Race almost thirty years ago, you saw what is now called the Sports Racing Class. These cars were built strictly for racing but have two seats and fenders. Lola's, Alfa Romeos and Lotus cars (especially the front engined Lotus 7) are the popular vehicles in this class. And if you like the Little British Buzz Boxes, your choice is the Sedan and Production Sport Car Class. Cars like the Bug Eyed Sprite and the MGA battle the little car that is still racing at club events today, the Austin Cooper S. Noisy, fast and ex- citing, this class has a lot of entrants and is always fun to watch. Finally the big boys, the historic cars. These are the later model sports cars with the big horsepower engines. Here you will find everything from Can-AM cars to Corvettes and Mustangs showing you what speed really is. The nicest part about the Vintage Festival for the spectators is that the car racers are truly car buffs. Ask a simple question of one of these proud owners and you had better be prepared to stand and listen for a while. The owners go to great lengths to not only rebuild the car, but to find out its history, who drove it, when and where and they love to brag about their findings. Visiting one of these festivals you can definitely see how man's love affair with speed and the automobile has progress- ed and it's amazing to see just how humble the roots of today's Formula One and LeMan"s Style cars Jesy were.
