Port Perry Star ADVERTISING DEADLINE MONDAY - 12 NOON Real Estates - 5 Friday A little work will help swimming pool sparkle A swimming pool needs cons- tant maintenance in order to en- sure its continued beauty, durability, and proper function- ing. The Ontario Real Estate Association recommends the following steps to keep your pool clean and clear. Skim the pool's surface, and remove any floating debris that may not have been caught by the automatic surface skimmer. A standard leaf skimmer (a net-like tool with a long handle), can easi- ly do the task and help avoid the more difficult job of removing the debris once it sinks. Be sure to keep the drainer baskets in the skimmer and pump free from excessive debris. Any build up here will result in reduc- ed circulation and introduction of air into the system. Brush the pool walls and tile. Tile is best cleaned with a soft brush and a pool tile cleaner. The cleaning of pool walls will depend on your surface: cement, vinyl or fibre glass. For general cleaning, the pool sides shouild be brushed with strokes from the top to the bottom of the floor. Any debris can easily be removed with a vacuum. A pool should be vacuumed once a week, or more frequently following heavy storms. Always keep your filter clean. Depending on the type of filter, you can clean it either by washing it out, or by changing the filter elements. When a filter collects a lot of dirt, pressure will rise within it, and the circulation flow will decrease substantially. Finally, clean the deck area by using a garden hose. Always direct the water away from the pool to avoid getting dirt in the newly-cleaned pool, and to eliminate the possibility of swim- mers tracking dirt into the pool as they cross the deck. Take a sample of pool water to your dealer for analysis a couple of times a year to ensure it is free from pollutants and contains the correct balance of chemicals for safe, hygenic, swimming. Routine pool maintenance re- quires between four to eight hours a week during the peak swimm- ing season. However, you may want to hire a professional pool maintenance company for routine maintenance. A full-service con- tract costs around $100 2 month, and includes weekly inspections and cleaning. If a pool is not serviced by a maintenance company, you should have professional pool care twice each year; when the pool is opened for the swimming season, and when the pool is clos- ed for the winter.
