Bobbie Drew and Joyce Kelly made the comments last week in reaction to a report from a Legislative Committee which suggests that Ontario should allow school boards to keep the schools open for class- es year round. "There are pros and cons to the idea, but I think over the long haul, it would be benefi- cial. I really think it is worth looking into. I would want to keep an open mind on the idea," said Mrs. Drew. "Sure it is worth a look and further study," said Mrs. Kelly, adding that if such a plan were implemented it likely would startat ihe primary levels. Mrs. Kelly said that one thing that should be made clear is that students would not be getting more school time in the a 12 month period, only that they would attend classes year round with their ten weeks holi- day staggered throughout the year, rather than all at one time from late June to September. Mrs. Drew said that if such a plan were tried, even on a pilot project basis in Durham, it would mean adjustments for parents, students and teachers. She suggested that a small scale pilot project would be the "gensisble way" for the Durham Board to thoroughly examine theidea. One staff report has already been completed and a second oneis expected later this fall. The initial report suggests that staggered vacation time (shorter holiday periods) would make schools more efficient in operation, would reduce the in- terruption in the learning pro- cess, increase the number of students in a school, and could reduce incidents of school van- dalism. Some of the drawbacks in- clude problems for parents with baby-sitting, parents schedul- ing vacation time to co-incide with the time their children are off school, and possible opposi- tion from teachers.
