Younsgter spends a lot of time on the golf course Gearing for Ontario Junior ¢ If you are looking for Eddie Maunder this summer, forget the beach or the pool. Chances are you'll find him on the golf course. The Scugog Island young- ster, who won't be 12 until Octo- ber, has been bitten by the golf bug since he first picked up a .clubwhen he was two. And this year, he is putting some pretty impressive scores up. On June 29, for example, he shot an 82 at Golf Haven in Gilford to win the Central Onta- rio Junior championship in the 9-12 age group. That was six shots better than his nearest competitor. Eddie qualified for that event by winningin Ajax back in May. With a 12 handicap at Sun- nybrae in Prince Albert, he has broken 80 several times and his lowest scoreisa 77. His victory in the Central Ontario event helped earn him a bye into the all-Ontario cham- pionship, a 36 hole event to be held July 25-26 near St. Cathe- rines. Eddie will be competing in the Bantam age group against 12 and 13-year olds, but that Joearey seem to bother him one it. He plays golf every day, ex- cept when he has to take a bit of time off to let blisters on his feet heal. And when he's not playing, he is practising, especially the longirons and his putting. "He really works at it, puts in 40 hours a week. Golf's like a job for him," says his father, Greg, himself an avid golfer who has helped Eddie along the way. Eddie was barely a toddler when he first picked up a golf club. He hit a ball and put a big dent in the side of his grand- mother's shed. He has been swinging a club ever since. For an 11-year old who breathes, eats and sleeps the game, it's not surprising to learn that his ambition is to someday make it to the profes- sional tour. His favourite Pres are Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus, but he fashioned his swing after that of the late George Knud- sen, considered by many to be the finest golfer everin Canada. A couple of weeks ago, Ed- die spent two days at the Cana- dian Open in Oakville watch- ing, and no doubt learning from the best golfers in the world. While the Ontario Junior event later this month will be the highlight of his summer, Eddie will be taking in several other tournaments as well. He'll be in Lindsay this Fri- day, July 14, then early in Au- gust will put his skills to the test in Bowmanville and at the demanding Thunderbird course in Ashburn. And he'll be competing in several Junior events at his home Sunnybrae course. Blessed with natural abili- ty, determination and confi- dence. this 11-year old appears to have a bright future ahead of himon the golfcourse.
