Chamber of Commerce president Fred Churchill told the Star the decision on the new theme will be made by the com- mittee in the near future and he speculated it will have more of a "festive air," possibly Mexican, Spanish, Hawaiin or southern California. Mr. Churchill described Festival Days "89 as just a "great weekend." Blessed with perfect weather, the Thursday through Sunday Festival drew large numbers of people to most of the scheduled events, though Mr. Churchill conceded that the crowds at some events were "disappointing." He mentioned the Satur- day night dinner in the Big Tent and the Muchmusic VJ Dance for teens at the Scugog Arena. "We (the committee) really don't know why some events were not well attended. It is something the committee will be looking at carefully in the plans for next year," he said. "But I think that overall the weekend was very success- ful," he added, citing such at- tractions as the Barley Mow Pub, the Golden Griddle Pan- cake breakfast, the Craft Show, the professional Water Ski Show as just some of the events that were a big hit with the crowds. As an example, close to 6,000 people sat down to pan- cake breakfasts on Saturday morning. . And he said the Wing Eat- ing contest was a real crowd pleaser, along with the Opening Ceremonies. "We had planned to serve about 300 hot dogs, and we had to cut things off after 600," he said. And he said the organizers were thankful there were no se- rious incidents. Months of hard work by a Puffy the Magic Clown dazzled a huge crowd of young- sters Friday morning at the Teen Tent. "I want to say a big thank you to all who volunteered in any way, and a thank you to the people of Port Perry putting up with any of the inconvenienc- es," he stated. Of course, there is no way of getting an accurate count on just how many people attended events over the weekend. And Mr. Churchill said it will be a week or two before the Scugog Chamber of Commerce knows how it fared from a finan- cial point of view. He said the event is becom- ing very expensive to stage for such things as tents, chairs, ta- bles, special attractions and en- tertainment. young rabbit out of his hat--whoops, we mean out of a box!
