Gamblers in battle for first The Greenbank Gamblers took to the diamond on three occasions last week and when the dust had cleared they had picked up four of a possible six points to stay right in the thick of the battle for top spot. On Monday night the Richmond Hill Merchants were the visitors in Greenbank Park and behind the two hit pitching of Glen Moreland defeated the Green- bank team by a 6-2 score. Terry Till and Don Beaton were the only Gamblers to hit safely off the fireballing Moreland but he issued four walks and Greenbank managed to score a pair of runs. Ken Goreski was on the hill for Greenbank and allowed only eight hits to the Richmond Hill squad but the Gambler defense played their poorest game of the season and allowed Richmond Hill to have a big five run third inning. On August 4-5-6, the Gamblers will be in Burlington at the Senior "A" Championships where they will be seeing other pitchers of the calibre of Glen Moreland so they had better tune up their batting eyes in the next couple of weeks. On Tuesday night Greenbank travelled to Oghawa to meet the Oshawa Juniors and this time around the team had the bats working as they had ten hits Pee Wee HL On July 3, 1989, Kentucky Fried Chicken beat Standard Electric by the score of 12 to 5. On Thursday night the Gamblers visited Port Perry where they met the X L Eagles and as usual the game was ex- tremely close. Larry Pilkey led off the Port Perry first inning with a long tri- ple to left centrefield and scored on an infield play to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The game against Scarborough was the toughest competition of the year, and the first left hand- ed pitcher the team had faced. The game turned out to be a real pitcher's duel, with Brett and the pitcher from Scarborough throw- ing 8 strike outs each. Scott MacLennan not only was involved in 9 put outs, but also threw out 2 runners to slow down the speedy Scarborough team. Then in the sixth inning the Gamblers plated the winning run when John Jeffs singled, was sacrificed to second by Brian Till and scored when again Don Beaton ripped a single through the Port Perry infield. That completed the scoring and Greenbank held on for a tight 2-1 victory. John Jeffs and Don Beaton each had a pair of hits with Rodd Real and Terry Till rounding out the Greenbank attack. Larry Pilkey had the only safe hit for the Eagles as they failed to solve the Gambler pitching. Both teams played excellent defense in the error free game.
