At Corner Five by John "Wally" Nesbitt It's comforting to know, for us Mere Mortals, that even Geniuses do occasionally make mistakes, Roger Penske, the reigning Czar of Indy Car Racing, has had incredible success as a racer, team manager and car builder. His record over the past twenty years boasts a total of eight Indianapolis 500 victories and a similar number of National Championships and his new car, the PC-18, has won every race but one this season. In fact, it was a Penske built car that took the chequered flag at the 1989 Indy 500. Unfortunately, it was the car that "The Captain' had sold to the Pat Patrick racing team that carried Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi to the victory circle. If Penske was having any second thoughts about letting the competition use one of his cars against his own team after the May Classic, any doubts would only have been reinforced as the ex-twice World Champion Fittipaldi has gone on to three conse- cutive victories leading up to the race at the Meadowlands and Toronto's Molson Indy. And Fittipaldi has always scored well in Toronto with one pole position and one victory (in 1987) to his credit on the twisty 1.78 mile street course. ; Now in it's fourth year on the calender, the Molson Indy is the ninth stop in the 15 event C.A.R.T./P.P.G. Indy Car World Series and is one of the driver's favourite road courses: The eleven turn circuit is very wide which presents the racers with plenty of passing opportunities and is amazingly fast for a tem- porary road course. Average lap speeds are in excess of 106 miles per hour with most cars topping the 190 MPH mark on the Lakeshore Blvd. Straightaway. And the paycheque isn't bad . either with the winner guaranteed $68,160 in American dollars. Not bad for two hours work! Chasing the winner's Laurel's (and prize money) in Toron- to will be three homegrown drivers. Local boy Scott Goodyear has teamed up with another Toron- to native Ludwig Heimrath Jr. for this race in the Hemelgarn MacKenzie Financial Lola Judd. Scott had a career high eighth place finish in the Molson Indy two years ago and is hoping a good showing here will allow him to return to the Indy Car Bat- tles on a full time basis. John Jones of Thunder Bay was the Cart Rookie of the year in 1988 but has found little in the way of success this season. Hopefully his Protofab Lola Cosworth will perform well at home and match or better last year's seventh place finish. In addition to the 103 lap feature race there will be three sup- porting events to fill out the card. The American Racing Series (A.R.S.) is a supporting event for all Indy car races and is a stepping stone to the Big Leagues. These cars look like Mini Indy Cars and are powered by 450 horsepower Buick engines. Watch Sunday morning for Canadian Sombetitors Paul Tracy, Danny Campeau and Tom Christoff in event. .ThePlayers Ltd. GM Motorsport Series for Showroom Stock Camaros and Firebirds is a staple at any race weekend in Canada and should be especially exciting as the usual "Bump And Crunch" always seems a little more enthusiastic when a large crowd or National TV coverage appears. Mississauga's Ron Fellows will be back to try to duplicate last year's victory an eye out for the yellow and black Esso Protec Car of Uxbridge's Doug Beatty. This race runs mid-afternoon on Saturday. The newest addition to the Indy weekend is the Corvette Challenge Race. The brainchild of Blackstock's John Powell, this race is for Showroom Stock Corvettes and will undoubtedly be the most competitive of all the events. These identically cars are 80 equal that the entire grid generally have qualifying times separated by no more than a couple of seconds. time 500 winner Johnny Rutherford will compete and is teammed with the Sole' Canuck, Peter Lockhart, who is a former Players/GM Champion. Hopefully these drivers can keep the fi ass away from the concrete as this Chevy Thunder Rumbles on at 10 o'clock Sunday morning. .
