Points were awarded for putting the ball In, and creativity. The first annual Slam Dunk contest was a smash. About two dozen boys came out for the challenge to show - their skills. There were three categories of play, determined by height. Jay Tredway, Aaron Massey and Mike Kosurko were the winners of their class, and will be awarded trophies and jackets. Travellers in search of a league championship The Nonquon Travellers are still around, continuing their quest for a league championship, winning 2 in a row last week, beating Huggies from Oshawa and Brooklin. } On Tuesday July 11th the Travellers hosted Huggies from Oshawa and squeaked out a 5-4 win. Roland Osske went the distance and pitched an excellent game collecting 7 strikouts. The Travellers lead 4-1 going into the 7th inning, when Huggies scored 3 runs, evening the score at 4-4. At the bottom of the 7th, Lee Wilbur got on with a walk, and made his way to third on passed balls. Todd Wilbur hit a blooper over 2nd to score the other Wilbur from 3rd to finish the game. Brian Robinson had a hot night collec- ting a triple, single and a RBI. Roland Osske contributed also the offense with 2 singles. Chris Cookman ripped a single for a RBI. Todd Wilbur also nailed a double for a RBI. Lee Wilbur also Goalies put on a clinic Three of the six squirt soccer teams were able to completely shut down their opposition of Wednesday July 12. Van Camp won a 6-0 victory over Classic Photo with Brad Johnston being responsible for 5 goals and Chris McWilliam scor- ing one. Ian Garnett, Jody May and Conan Duda all played well. The Royal Canadian Legion outhustled Raglan Welding to defeat that team 9-0. Scoring for the Legion team were Bob Cowie 4, Jorden MacKay 4 and Stephen Nagy 1. The Lions Club was once again really short handed and lost a 7-0 game with Port Perry Star. The Star team has really turned on the jets this last couple of weeks with a marked improvement in their playing. Laura Gedge and Mike Demaio shared the goal keepers shut out and Jamie Byars, Ashley Murphy and Scott Cunningham were the scorers. The second half of the game was scoreless for both teams but the Lions Club had some really close chances. Tyler Mark, Chad Lance, Joshua Helsdonn and Sean Williams played well but weren't able to put one in. ~ Soccer Tip of the Week: Corner Kicks - When a member of the defending team puts the ball out of play over the goal line a corner kick is awarded to the attacking - team. The kick is taken at the cor- ner on the side of the field the ball went out of play. A goal can be scored direct. Keep yourself informed...... Read the Star weeklyl | cashed in 2 RBI's, while Rob Franssen cashed in with a single. On Thursday July 13th the Travellers went to Brooklin and came through with a 4-3 win. Col- lecting hits for the Travellers were Greg Warriner, Lee Wilbur, Chris Cookman, Dave Canning, Brian Robinson to round out the hitting. Tim Thompson went the distance, and pitched very well collecting a couple of strike outs. As it stands the Travellers have 11 wins 3 losses and 2 ties for 24 pts, to put them almost on top of the "B"' Division. 3 The Nonquon Travellers will be hosting their own tournament on July 21, and 22nd with local teams such as X L Eagles, Greenbank Gamblers and Oshawa Merchants. The Travellers next home game will be on Sunday July 23 at home at 7:00 p.m.. Be watching for more informa- tion on the tournament and come out and support the Nonquon Travellers.
