LIFEGUIDE By Rev. David Beesley | "Don't you just love the summertime? There is something special about the summer months that make for great times together. Whether it's idly tossing a frisbee at the park or in- dulging in a refreshing swim at the lake or just basking in the warm glow of a camp fire. There's a certain degree of enhanc- "ed intimacy which seems to permeate all that we do at this time of year. Perhaps the pleasant sunshine somehow rekindles withing us a fresh realization of the importance of family and sharing close experiences with those we love. It is unfortunate, almost tragic, that we all are so bound by duties, obligations, responsibilities and jam-packed schedules that we often forget to make room for pure fun in life (at times I think we should be far more serious about our fun). Both a driving appetite for work (as in the case of the workaholic) and an outright neglect of family needs for enjoy- ment together (as in the case of selfish personal leisure pursuits) rob us of wonderful opportunities to grow together in mutual love, understanding and appreciation. "It was said of Boswell, the famous biographer of Samuel Johnson, that we often referred to a special day in his childhood when his father took him fishing. The day was fixed in his adult mind, and he often reflected upon many of the things his father had taught him in the course of their fishing experience together. After having heard of that particular excursion so often, it oc- curred to someone much later, to check the journal that 'Boswell's father kept and determine what had been said about the fishing trip from the parental perspective. Turning to that date, the reader found only one sentence entered: "Gone fishing today 'with my son; a day wasted." -# time spent with your children is not time wasted, but time invested. : * while working hard is both good and honourable it must never be done at the expense of those who love us and need us. _ ® there is no better time than the present to present your most precious gift to your family - yourself! ' # Moments of intimacy are the glue that binds special peo- le together. : P 8 fpBother we need to adjust our thinking to ensure that the opportunities for togetherness that come our way this summer are seized, not squandered. Let's all make this a season jaturated with the sights and sounds of family fun. "Rev. David Beesley is'pastor of Emmanuel Pentecostal Chitirch in Port Perry. Rev.
