Returning a $2000 ring Good neighbour by Rob Streich Melissa Dawson usually enjoys the quiet Sunday morn- ings when she delivers the To- ronto Sun throughout Prince Albert. She had noidea that July 9 would be any different, that she would pick up anything other than an extra route for her va- cationing brother. Yet at approximatel 7:45 on that fateful morning, Melis- sa found a ring which saved a family some heartache and re- sulted in a reward of $50 for her good citizenship. On July 9, on her paper route with her father Jon, Me- lissa spotted something shiny Just at the edge of a driveway at ictoria and Simcoe, Prince Al- bert. At first she did not know what it was, "I was just going to throw it back," said Melissa. She thought that it might be a novelty ring, not a gold men's wedding ring with real dia- monds. But she examined it for en- gravings and spotted some- thing on it which she didn't un- derstand. She took it to her father and he explained that it was a karat value, indicating .the purity of the gold in the ring. The ring had several dia- monds set into it, which Jon es- timated would make it worth over $500 (its actual value is closer to $2000) Melissa took the ring, polished it and set it aside for safekeeping -only mis- placing it for one nervous mo- ment. She wasn't exactly sure what to do with the ring. Being a good girl guide, she knew that she should try to give it back but her mother Bev had looked in the paper and there wasn't an advertisement for a missing ring. No one knew anything about a missing ring. Her par- ents were going to have it ap- praised to see if it was real and if it was valuable then they were going to put an ad in the paper. But, as luck would have it, Melissa's paper distributing SMALL ENGINE REPAIRS LILLA ST. NORTH (DURHAM RD. 2) 985-3192 Thank You We would like to thank everyone who WINNERS of FREE DRAWS: T. Garry , the national sales manager for an architectural/ building firm out of Oshawa, had been helping a friend work on his car the previous week- end. He had removed his wed- ding ring and the ring his par- ents had given him on his 21st birthday and set them on the trunk of his wifes' car. Sure enough, without see- ing them, his wife had driven off down the road, losing the rings along the way. While both rings were Soe. cial, the wedding ring held a great deal of sentimental value, mainly because his wife had de- signed it herself. The other ring had just been cleaned and reengraved as a Father's Day present from Garry's baby boy. luck would have it, Gar- ry had found his pinky ring be- fore Dawson's called. He spot- ted it embedded in the asphalt by Simcoe and 7A. "The ring had been run over several times and was crushed flat," explained Garry. "I figured if one ring was there, the other couldn't be too far away." So Garry and his search party spent a long time peering through the ditches along the road and carefully inspecting 11 line td MAIR's hwy 47 oe hwy 7a Port Perry at the MAIR'S a RASPBERRIES Phone: 985-8295 the edges of peoples' lawns, get- ting plenty of funny stares, but without finding anything. To show his appreciation and his thanks, Garry gave Me- lissa a cheque for $50 (equiva- lent to the insurance deducti- ble) as a reward. Garry said that he was glad he had moved to Port Perry five months ago. "In To- ronto I would never have gotten my ring back. But Port Perry still has plenty of small town friendliness, and that makes life here nicer all around," he 'said.
