16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 1, 1989 Intrepid Coltager (From page 14) tractor banned me from the job after losing three helpers to Workman's Comp. So letting me do the paper seemed a safe bet. Using a tape with metric on one side and inches on the other, I meticulously measured the one wall to be papered and multiplied to get the square footage. Then I wrote it down and double checked my figures. After a massive search involving every sample book in town and several irate clerks, I found a perfect striped paper and plac- ed a special order for the 24 double rolls I needed. The bill was over $400 and the wait two weeks, but proudly I brought it home. F That night, I awoke with a horrible thought. I raced § downstairs in the nude. As I re-measured the wall, the wife yell- ed: "Honey, you don't have to stand outside again tonight!" But I didn't care. By mixing both sides of the tape together, I had botched it. I deserved to be bug bait. I had enough wallpaper to cover the one wall, all the other walls, the exterior, the outhouse, boat house and probably the boat, the dog house and my casket, which I might need sooner than later. Mortified, I phoned the store to ask if they gave refunds on unopened rolls. Gladly, they said and off I went to the store. "I'm returning what I didn't use for a refund," I stated and { set 22 double rolls on the counter. The clerk looked doubtful, so I tried some male bonding: 'Never let the wife take the [| | measurements, know what I mean?" : : When I returned home, the wife and the contractor were | waiting. "Honey, what happened to all that wallpaper?" says | she. "Ya, honey?" echoes he. Nonchalantly, I replied: "I | just brought extra home to make sure we got a good match." '#1 The wife muttered something about needing a match if there'd . been no refund and the contractor guffawed - this from a man who was expecting to be paid be that same jerk who couldn't even do wallpaper. He should have been worried, not happy. Then both summer and reno were over and it was time to close for the season, easier with the doors back on. My one lone | wall of paper seemed smaller somehow. And I was still fidgety. | The wife said it was the after shock of my contribution to the | remodelling. But I think it was because so many of our § neighbours bought striped wallpaper on sale that week. ; 4 A a WATERCRAFT MARK WARBURTON Expert boat repairs, refinishing, installations, restoration and new construction. * Wood and fiberglass * Mobile Service Shop (416) 985-0300 Res.
