Earthquake points While it may not be likely that there will be an earth- quake in Scugog Township in the immediate future, in the spirit of boy scouts eve- rywhere, we have taken this list of pointers from the De- partment of Energy Mines and Resources. Earthquakes can occur anywhere in Canada at any- time. The highest risk are- as are the Pacific Coast, the Yukon Territories and Parts of Ontario and Quebec. Regardless of where you live, however, the best ad- vice is to be prepared: * Keep an emergency survi- val kit on hand containing food, sleeping bags, medica- tion, first aid supplies and bottled water. * Know how to turn off your home's electricity at the main switch, and gas and water at the main valves. * Bolt down water heaters and gas appliances and place large heavy objects on lower shelves. Most deaths in an earthquake occur from falling objects or debris, not the actual movement of the ground. If and when an earth- quake strikes, take the fol- lowing precautions: * If you are indoors, stay there. Crawl under a bed or desk, away from windows. * If you're outdoors, move away from buildings and power lines. * If you're driving, stop your vehicle and remain in it - unless you are on a bridge, an overpass or where a building could fall on the ve- hicle. A warrior with no fear. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 1, 1989 -- 19 It is too bad we can't bring you this photo in colour to show the beautiful flowers these people are holding. The flowers are roses of red and white, specially developed by White Rose for Kinsmen/Kinette Clubs. From left in photo are David Raab, general manager, White Rose Farms near Uxbridge; Vanessa Taber of Port Perry, district Kinette co- ordinator; and Dave Robinson of Port Perry, Kinsmen District 8 governor. See story about how the Kinsmen Rose will be used by the clubs In thelr efforts to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research. Kinsmen Club boasts a new rose Kinsmen/Kinette Clubs across Ontario have a new "weapon" in their on-going bat- tle to raise money for Cystic Fi- brosis research. It is. a delicate weapon, beautiful in colour and fra- gance, a delight to the eye that will be visible in the gardens of flower lovers next summer. Thanks to the efforts of White Rose Nurseries, Kins- men Clubs now have a distincit- ve red and white rose to call theirown. The Kinsmen CF Rose was "unveiled" at a ceremony at the White Rose Nurseries Farm west of Uxbridge last week. The rose is red and white in colour, the Kinsmen Club col- ours, and it will be the symbol and a money raising tool for the Clubs Cystic Fibrosis fund rais- ing. Dave Robinson of Port Perry, who is District 8 Govern- or for Kinsmen Clubs, praised the efforts of White Rose Nur- series for naming this rose the "Kinsmen CF Rose." He said the use of the rose will be a powerful promotional symbol for Kin and Kinette Clubs and their fund raising ef- forts for CF. This particular flower was hyberdized in France and sent to White Rose Nurseries for testing to determine if it is adaptable for Canadian grow- ing conditions. David Raab, general man- ager for White Rose said the flower proved to be very well suited for this part of the world, and early next spring about 1,000 plants will go on sale at the 16 White Rose retail outlets in Ontario. The following year, he pre- dicted that 4,000 of the plants would be ready for sale. And a portion of the sales from those plants will be turned over to the Kinsmen for Cystic Fibrosis research. This is not the first time that White Rose has developed a flower to use for fund raising for a worthy cause. Two years ago, a yellow rose was donated to Sunny- brook Hospital in Toronto, and last Thursday, White Rose pre- sented hospital officials with a cheque for $100,000. As for Kinsmen and Kin- ette Clubs, they have raised some $13 million for CF since 1964, helping to make Canada one of the world leaders in re- search to find a cure for this dreaded disease. The red and white Kins- men CF Rose unveiled last week will help the clubs contin- ue their fight to assist research- es in this noble cause. ---- You know we mean business.
