Letters to the editor Proposal for leaf composting Dear Sir: I am writing to you in regards to garbage disposal in Scugog, specifically the disposal of leaves. There has been much discus- sion recently concerning the sub- ject of leaf disposal, however I have not seen any concrete pro- posal put forward; hence the reason for this letter. I have a farm in Scugog Township, approximately 65 acres, about '% of which is dense- ly wooded. Within this wooded area is an ideal site for the com- posting of leaves. Here is my proposal. I confine my remarks to Ward 2 (Port Perry),Scugog Township. If the Township of Scugog or perhaps through some arrange- ment with Durham Region, will procure and make available to residents of Port Perry, biodegradable bags for the use of leaf collection, I will at no charge for a 2 week period, in the fall pick up any bags of leaves that have been filled and put out by the residents. I will compost this refuse at my farm, again at no charge. I am prepared to make Alcohol continues to kill on the highways To the Editor: Summer's here and the temperature's rising. So are the number of alcohol-related automobile, motorcycle, bicycle and boating accidents. The warm summer weather and the holiday season result in a dramatic increase in traffic volume every year. Unfortunate- ly, the increased volume also leads to an increase in fatal vehi- cle accidents. Over the course of a year, bet- ween one-quarter and one-third of fatal automobile accidents in- .volve a driver who has been drinking or doing drugs. Forty per cent of drivers killed have been drinking. And, .. .weekends (Friday through Sun- days and holiday Mondays) ac- count for two-thirds of drinking driver's accidents. - The major contributing factors in accidents were excessive speed, alcohol and failure to wear seat belts. Approximately twenty per cent of motorists killed were ejected from their vehicles. Without a doubt seat belts save many lives. So the safest approach at all times is not to drink or do drugs before driving or boating. This Civic Day, Aug. 5-6-7 weekend, also Labour Day, Sept. 2-3-4 weekend, Police forces will be enforcing speeding, drinking and seat belt laws on these Holi- day Weekends. Wishing you all, a happy acci- dent free holiday. Roy Walker Smith Port Perry Ontario EMMERSON INSURANCE BROKERS LIMITED 193 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY, ONT. I had hoped to make this offer via the tender form for garbage collection in Scugog Township, but the forms dv not make provi- sion for such an arrangement. Please consider this letter then, as my offer to you in this matter. I would ask that you present my proposal to relevant departments within the municipality for com- ment, and to the elected council, Scugog Township, for their consideration. I have also submitted a copy of this letter to the Port Perry Star for inclusion in Letters To Editor, to obtain public comment. Thank-you very much for your attention. Yours Truly Phil Romanenko Scugog Township Editor's Note: The following let- ter was sent to Scugog Township administrator, Earl Cuddie, with a request that it also be publish- ed in the Port Perry Star. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 1, 1989 -- 21 Thieves remove Thieves made off with the electrical panel installed by La- rocque Electric recently at a nearly completed new home north of Port Perry. Rick Larocque told the Star it will cost about $1,000 to re- place the panel and cause a lot of aggrevation for the home- owner. This is the third panel in as many summers stolen just after installation by Larocque, and he has heard of several other similar thefts from homes un- der construction north and east of Oshawa. He said the thefts take place within a short space of time between installation and final inspection by Hydro offi- cials. He said whoever is remov- ing the panels "must know what they are doing. This is not the work of kids." Two summers ago, La- rocque lost a newly installed panel from a home in Cawker's Creek. Last year, it was from a home in Harbour Castle; and the most recent incident was at a home between Port Perry and Seagrave. It was suggested that peo- ple living close to new houses under construction may be able to help prevent this and other kinds of theft by keeping an eye on the property, especially at night and reporting any suspi- cious vehicles. Over the past few months, Durham Region Police have re- ceived several reports of thefts at construction sites, usually in- volving tools, equipment or ma- terials. |
