26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 9, 1989 Port Perry 8 XL Eagles soar to first place finish The Port Perry XL Fastball Tournament attracted 14 teams over the weekend with the host team, the Port Perry XL Ea- gles, winning the championship and $1,000. Willlams' outstanding stamina lead the Eagles to a 7-1 victory over the Agincourt Champlons in the cham- plonship game Monday night. Van Camp scored 3 minutes into the game on a kick by Aaron Chambers. Bob Cowie of the Legion tied it up for the Legion in the second half but with only a few minutes left in the game Aaron scored his second goal and put Van Camp ahead. Shawn Martin, Brad Johnston & Chris McWilliam played well for their respective teams. Another very close match was between Raglan Welding and the Port Perry Star. Scott Cunn- ingham scored twice and Greg Bruton once giving the Star team the victory. It seems the Lions Club often plays short handed but 3 players was just not enough. Officially the game had to be defaulted but the Classic Photo team showed real sportsmanship by lending the Lions Club 3 players to even things up a bit. Jason Crosier worked really hard for Lions help- ing out Sean Williams and his 2 teammates. Jody May played well on defense with Leslie Hunter and Devon Symes playing well on the forward line. Lions Club players Josh Helsdonn and Jason Whit- worth had such good support, as a matter of fact, they were able to score 3 goals. Darryl Dalton made a par- ticularly fine tackle and both goalies did a fine job (although they did look a bit big)! Soccer Tip of the Week -- Penalty kicks -- If a player com- mits an offense for which a direct free kick is normally awarded in his own team's penalty area, the opposition is awarded a penalty kick. All players apart from the goalie must stand outside the penalty area and arc until the kick is taken. The goalie must stand on the goal line without moving his feet until the kick is taken. Gamblers gain experience at Burlington The Greenbank Gamblers went to the Senior '"'A" Tournament in Furlington to compete with the top teams in Ontario and to gain more experience a the senior level. The big rain storm hit Burl- ington late Friday night and the Greenbank game which was originally scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Saturday was twice postponed; first to 11:00 a.m. to finally at 1:00. Jm.. : p So at 1:00 Saturday afternoon the Gamblers faced Sarnia of the Inter-City Fastball League and went down to defeat by a 7-0 score. Glen Golem and Durwyn " Yhidglns feaned up to piteh the shutout for Sarnia and they only allowed three hits to Greenbank as Terry Till, George Redshaw and Dennis Ewart each hit safely. The Gamblers, Russ: Korbuk had an off day on the Greenbank mound and Sarnia had a total of eight hits during the game. The result of this game was a major. disappointment to the Greenbank Hurlér who was riding a hot streak of consecutive wins including a pair of shutout games. However every team has an off game and nothing went well for the Gamblers. Greenbanks third baseman Brian Till took 'a bad bounce ground ball on the jaw early in the game and was lost to the team for the balance of the tournament. However nothing was broken and the classy third baseman should be ready for action for the tour- nament in Minden next weekend. Ken Goreski came on in relief of Korbak with men on first and third with nobody out and he managed to retire the side without a run scoring. He also pit- ched the last inning with a "three up, three down" performance to cap off a fine effort by the veteran left hander. However the Gamblers failed to score any runs in the game which of course led to their downfall. In the late game on Saturday night, Greenbank met up with the - Ottawa. ""Turpins"-.and - Mark Goreski and Greg McLaren hook- ed up in a dandy pitchers duel that wasn't settled until the final inning. Greenbank scored first in this game as Paul Goreski and Mark Goreski had back to back singles and Paul Goreski scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by John Foster. Ottawa tied the game in the "third inning as Lou Nistico dumped a bloop single into short left field with two out and two strikes on the batter, and scored Larry Skinner from second base. With the score still tied at 1-1, the Gamblers had a great oppor- tunity to take the lead in the bot- - tom of the sixth inning. - * - - ~~ Don Beaton led off the inning with a line drive double to right field. Hugh Johnston came on to run for Beaton and moved over to third base on a passed ball. Paul Goreski drew a base on balls and with Mark Goreski at the plate Johnston tried to score as the ball got away from the Ottawa catcher. The play at the plate was ex- tremely close but the Umpires call was that the runner was out and the inning was over. In the top of the seventh inning the Ottawa Batters managed to find the gaps in the Gambler in- field and scored four runs before the side was retired and the bia tie a (Tu to page 27)
