¥ How are you gonna keep them down on the farm after they've seen Port Perry? Fourteen students from across Canada and Ecudaor ar- rived in Port Perry last week for a three month stay. The students are participat- ing in the Canada World Youth exchange, and will view first- hand the political and economi- cal differences that existin Can- ada and Ecuador. During a welcoming recep- tion for the participants last week, Canadian group leader Derek Dobos said the exchange is not a vacation. "The exchange is definitely not a tourism-oriented trip," he said. The participants are here to experience life in a rural farm- ing atmosphere. Several farms in the Man- chester and Epsom area will host the participants. In return the students will help the fami- ly with their farming operation. o%ef % truguA Nahsanhe\Y PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 9, 1989 -- 43 Ecuador students arrive for World Youth Exchange for about two weeks and friend- ships were being to flourish. After the reception, the group stayed at the Anglican Church for five days where they took partin the Participant Orienta- tion Camp in the Community. Previously, the group attend- ed a similar camp in Oakville called the Participant Orienta- tion Camp. The participants learned about cultural sensitiv- ity, standards of behavior, male/female roles in society, sexuality and about agriculture in Ontario. Canadians also gave intensive training in English to their Ecuadorian counterparts. The participants are now with their host families helping on the farms. Once a week the group will get together to do a work project together. Mr. Dobos said this may include community work like painting buildings at the fairgrounds. On Oct. 23 the participants will leave Canada and travel to Ecuador for a similar program. We Deliver The * SPORTS * FEATURES Im MATS vAgRY vena on 9 + POLITICAL Rain dance?
