Leanne has been in the spotlight several times this year as she won top prize at the urham and Canadian Science Fairs. Her project was a study of CMA, a non-corrosive chemi- cal which may replace road salt as the method we use for snow and ice removal during the win- r. As part of her reward for winning the Canada Wide Sci- ence Fair competition, she was whisked away to London dur- ing the last week of July for what was to turn out to be a great vacation. Leanne was conquering several new experiences at once. She had never been across the ocean, infrequently been on a plane, and had not visited as large a metropolis as London before. H it fi)? The Youth Science Foundation of Canada took care of transpor- tation and sundry expenses as well as supplying chaperones for each of the three Canadian students. The British fortnight organization provided accom- modations in the residence at the University of London, and entertainment. In the course of her tri the only thing Leanne could complain about was the heat and transportation. From the Slant things did not run smooth- y. At first her plane was rain delayed in Toronto. Then fol- lowing the two plane changesin Halifax and St. John, she ar- rived at Heathrow airport in the midst of a subway strike. She brought 70 copies with her to London. Arriving late Wednesday, she had a day to acclimatize, then she was before a commit- tee made up of professors from the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, etc. Things went well, and she is discussing publication of her work at the prestigious Univer- sity of Cambridge. Any awards given out at this conference were honorary, asit was more a meeting of the minds then a true competition, What she did not realize when she left was that presen- tation of a paper was optional, and more than two thirds of the participants decided to enjoy their visit without the accom- panying stress of presenting. While she was there, Leanne participated in an opening ceremony with the 600 other participants from around the world, including several from communist countries (and a whopping 30 from South Africa, with the U. S. bringing only 19). She was one of the young- est people (turning 17 while there, while many others were 20 and older), and also one of the few who had come from a public school system - the rest were mainly from private schools. She enjoyed travelling around London, visiting mu- seums, art galleries, and pubs. They travelled to Stonehenge, Stratford and went to several musicals including Cats, The Phantom and Les Miserables. Jjoyed setting out on their own, exploring London and playing tourist. Many of the other stu- dents whom the Canadians be- came close to went to school in England and knew their way around the city. One of the fascinating as- pects of her trip was trying to explain to students from tropi- cal countries just what her pro- ject was about. Melting ice off roads is not within the realm of experience for someone from the Middle East. Leanne felt that this 'con- test' was a real treat. In com- parison with other science fairs where one must present and then wait the elling days while judging takes place, this one got the work: over quickly, andit wasonto the play. But she eventually got back to Port Perry. Back at home, she feels really glad to live in Canada, where the school system is free to everyone who wants to enjoy it. With good public education here, there is no need to go abroad for schooling, no need to leave Pour home and family for great lengths of time. Leanne is going into her 0.A.C. year at Port Perry High. With offers of admission from several Ontario Universities, she is planning to enter into an Environmental Engineering coursein September 1990.
