28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 22, 1989 The Greenbank Gambler Fastball Club played twice during the week and got tremendous pit- ching performances from Russ Korbak and Mark Goreski. On Monday night in Greenbank Park Russ Korbak tossed a four hit shut out at the Oshawa Juniors as the Gamblers remained tied for top spot with the Stouffville Betz Pools. Korbak fanned eight Oshawa Batters during the game and gave up a single walk as he kept the Oshawa bats under control. In the Greenbank half of the first inning, Terry Till led off with a single and was doubled home by Gambler "clean up" batter Don Beaton. In the third inning Terry Till again led off the inning with a base hit and scored on John Jeffs long line drive home run. This made the score 3-0 for Green- bank and that was all Korbak needed to get the Gamblers the victory. Don Beaton had a three for three night for Greenbank, with Terry Till adding a pair of hits and Trevor Till, George Redshaw and Dennis Ewart hitting safely in addition to John Jeffs home run. On Thursday night in Richmond Hill against the Richmond Hill Merchants, Mark Goreski return- ed to his early season form and pitched a masterful one hit game. The lead off batter George Giamou for Richmond Hill singl- ed into centerfield to start the game and was sacrificed to se- cond. Then Goreski let two con- sectuive pitches go wide of the mark and the deep screen at Richmond Hill allowed the base runner to score. 'Then Mark took over and com- pletely shut down the Merchants for the balance of the game. He struck out thirteen batters along the way. Unfortunatety for Greenbank Mark Bendahan on the hill for the Merchants was also having a top game and he also claimed thir- Silver medals for the Bantams This past week-end the Cana- dian Tire Bantams played for the League Championship at Scar- borough Adam's Park and came in 2nd out of 12 teams, winning the silver. The tournament format was a double knock-out, and both of Port Perry's losses were against the exceptionally strong Scarborough Freeway Major Bantam team. On Friday, Port played Scar- borough Minor Bantams, hitting for 3 runs in the 6th inning for a close 3-2 win. Richard Brough picked up the win, allowing only 4 hits, walking 2, and striking out 5 batters. "The first game on Saturday was played against our strong rival, Unionville, and Port won 4-1. Unionville got only 1 run in the se- cond inning, and then Brett Puckrin shut them down, allowing no earned runs, 2 hits, no walks, and 5 strike outs. Port got 1 run in the 2nd, and then broke open in the 6th for 3 runs to win another close game. The second game was played against the League favourites, Scarborough Freeway. Port gave them the best competition of the day, losing by only 3 runs for a 5-2 final score. Brett got the loss, but allowed only 3 earned runs with 2 strike outs and no walks. Port got 2 runs in the 2nd inning, causing Scarborough to make a pitching change. No further runs were scored against their ace pitcher. The third game of the day was again with Unionville who had won a previous match to get back into contention. Port was the vie- tor in a very exciting overtime 4-2 win. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of the 7th, and using the Inter- national Rule, a runner was started and 2nd for each OT inn- ing. The score was tied 2-2 at the end of the 8th, and then Port scored 2 runners in the 9th to ad- vance into the championship final. After a late night, the Port team was back for an early morning game to play for the Gold. They lost 9-6 to the Scarborough Freeway team, but once again knocked out their starting pitcher. The Scarborough team had to bring in their ace to shut Port down in the 6th and 7th innings. Brett started the game, and Richard was brought in for relief, allowing only 1 earned runin7in- nings, besides hitting 2 singles and a double with his fourth hit being a hard drive which was caught by the pitcher in self- defence. Our Port Perry Bantams played extremely well in this tournament, and should be proud to have won the Silver.
