And a voice seems to say from afar, 'thy work on earth has been very well done and thy presence is required at a higher level." Sobeit and this the family in their great sorrow believe. Jean Mountjoy passed into eter- nal peace on Thursday, March 16, 1989 as a result of cancer. She fac- ed her illness bravely and with ac- ceptance. She was in her seventy second year. The service at Blackstock United Church was conducted by Rev. Dale Davis '"To Remember and Celebrate before God' The life of Jean Mountjoy. Her niece Heather Manning played a tribute by violin, her niece Linda Kyte was at the organ and her grand- son Allen Hudson played a farewell at the graveside by bad- pipe. Six of her nephews were the pearers. Jean Manning was born in the family home six miles from Davidson in Southern Saskat- chewan, an only daughter of Fred and Maggie Manning, on October 24, 1917. There her father 50 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 22, 1989 operated a hardware store and latterly a farm. The many stories Jean shared of her childhood on the Prairies captured the hearts and minds of those privileged to hear them. Especially cherished by her fami- ly and grandchildren were her adventures with her shetland pony named Beauty, a Christmas gift for her eighth birthday. One story called "Grandma's Christmas Pony" as related to a grandchild was featured in the Christmas edition of the Port Perry Star in 1977. Beauty eventually became the beloved pet of Jean's own children and lived to the age of thirty-seven. In 1933, after three years of crop failure and severe drought, the family moved to the Meaford, On- tario area. Jean, her parents and two brothers rode in the open family touring car with their family dog on the running board while the oldest brother, Archie, had travelled ahead in a railroad boxcar with furniture and a few animals, Beauty included, to make a new start in Ontario. Though the drought years left marks on those who experienced them they also left vivid impres- sions on those who heard about them. Schooling was important and Jean achieved her education driv- ing or riding to public school some distance from home and by cor- respondence for grade nine and ten with supervision by the public school teacher. It was necessary for her to board away from home to complete high school at both Davidson, Saskatchewan and at Meaford, Ontario for grade 13. In 1939 Jean graduated from the Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing after which she was hired as a general duty nurse in the Private Patients' Pavillion. Jean met Bruce Mountjoy in Toronto where she worked and lived with his sister, Aileen. They were married on December 12,1942 at her parents' home at Woodford near Meaford. They made their first home at Langstaff for twelve years and with their five children moved to Blackstock in 1956. On her marriage Jean's job as a nurse was terminated according to the custom of that day. However she resumed nursing some years later and did night du- ty at Newmarket Hospital for two years followed by twenty-five years at Port Perry Community Memorial Hospital part time and as the children grew up full time. Many people in her neighbourhood and community benefitted from her nursing skills and her compassionate nature. She made childhood illnesses memorable with the special knack that she had. Her enjoy- ment of people and her fascina- tion with the miracle of birth suited her well for her position as head of the maternity ward where she enjoyed working twelve years until her retirement in 1982. Her retirement gave her more time to be involved in Blackstock United Church as an elder, the U.C.W. and other community af- fairs. She and Bruce also camped throughout Ontario and the Haliburton Forest where she en- joyed and appreciated nature especially the birds which seem- ed fearless in her presence. The woodland partridge encouraged its young to dust bath in the san- dy area within a few feet of her; the robin came at the first sign of her shovel digging in her garden assured of a handy meal for its lit- tle ones. The oriole singing in the distance could be lured into her presence inquisitive of her imita- tion whistle. Jean's warm and cheerful en- couragements, sense of humour and equanimity in everything she did were gifts that she gave. She has left a legacy rich with beautiful memories for her fami- ly and friends. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered she leaves husband Bruce of Blackstock, children Elaine McShane of Brampton, Bonnie Hudson of Nestleton, (Gail predeceased in infancy), Ray Mountjoy of Stouffville, Gary Mountjoy of Whitby, Paul Moun- tjoy of Brampton, twelve grand- children, brothers Archie Mann- ing of Guelph, Gordon Manning of Walters Falls and Walter Mann- ing of Bognor.
