'kd t 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 22, 1989 "a v5} £23 V2 SRL | 1502 Cattlemen committee The Ontario Cattlemen's Association has named its Blueprint Committee. Chairing the seven person Committee will be Dr. Gordon Bowman from the Department of Animal and Poultry Science, University of Guelph. Cattlemen serving on the Committee are OCA directors, Ardiel Grieve, Simcoe County, Robert Kerr, Kent County, Rodney MacLaren, Prescott County, and David Whittington, Peterborough County. Brian Boyle, Agricultural Represen- tative with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food in Lambton County, is a member of the Com- mittee as well as Graeme Hedley, Manager of the Ontario Cat- tlemen's Association. The OCA's Blueprint for the Future was undertaken to provide a focus for ways of enhancing On- tario"s beef cattle industry through both consultation and review. Results of the beef vote indicated that cattlemen did not favour more regulated marketing. However, during the beef vote debates cattlemen did say that the industry needed new vitality. The Blueprint Committee has been charged with meeting this challenge. It will develop a discussion paper which will focus on potential directions for the in- dustry within a market-oriented structure as a means of fostering a healthier, more competitive industry. Jim Magee, OCA President, said: "This Committee has a good balance of cow-calf and cattle feeding interests, one of OMAF's most respected agricultural representatives, and our Manager who has an excellent perspective of the industry. All Committee members will be challenged by Chairman Bowman who has excellent credentials in the academic field and who has gained a reputation for being realistic. I expect the Committee and/or Committee members will be meeting with selected in- dividuals in the industry in the course of their deliberations." The Committee's target for completion of the discussion paper is early fall following which regional meetings will be set up Bhi. Ake. Site. Have you ever noticed that? The before pic- ture is always so out of focus that it makes it near impossible to tell if it is really the same person in both pictures. Now | realize that many of the weight loss clinics really help people with eating disorders so why don't they take professional before and after shots of the client? And why is it that the last forkful of food al- ways drops into your lap? This never happens when you've just start- ed your meal, but waits until you are about to take that last mouthful. And it's more apt to happen when you're all dolled up at some swanky soiree, instead of when your at home eating a TV dinner by the boob tube. . -While I'm on the subject of being all dressed up, why is it that no matter how far you've driven or how long you've looked for the most original gown to wear to some big function, someone else always shows up in the same dress? To make matters worse, they probably icked up the "one of a kind" dress at K-mart or half the price you paid. Why is it that men don't have any bathroom etiquette? Why is it that the week before you're about to take your first airplane trip, there are about you're flying on? Air travel is suppose to be the safest mode of transportation, but with the way statistics are beginning to pile up, it's no wonder so many people get air sick. 10 plane crashes, all involving the airline And why does luggage get lost? Why do you end up in Alaska and your un- dies end up in Tokyo? It really doesn't make any sense to me. Why do small insects and reptiles, like spr ders, snakes and frogs provoke fear into the hearts of humans? Why do you always get a grocery cart with one wheel that doesn't work right? it youre like me, you usually figure you can handle the frustration and you continue to use the disabled cart. But by the time you get to the freezer section, you've usually lost your cool because everytime you push the cart it goes in a complete circle. And why does it always rain the day after youve washed, waxed, and vacuumed your car? It never fails. You finally save up enough quarters to do the job properly and it starts raining cats and dogs -- or worse-- birds. Eve- ryone knows what birds can do to a freshly washed car. Why is it that when you're really tired and you're finally falling asleep, the phone rings or someone knocks at the door or one of the kids starts crying or the neighbors dog starts barking or the alarm goes off and it's time to getup Why is it when you finally get the time to go see that fantastic movie everyone has been raving about and the critics have predicted will sweep the Emmy awards, it's no longer showing? And just why do you always get so nervous before a job interview that you have to go to the ladies room and when you come out, you've tucked your skirt into your pantyhose. I want to know why! For Better or For Worse® by Lynn Johnston Letters to the FHditor To the Editor: My recent reading of the Bible has drawn to my attention the cries of the prophets against the practise of sacrificing infants to appease the false Gods of their time. Abortion, to me, is the sacrifice of infant life. Each time an infant dies the life of an irreplaceable, unique, and precious person is lost. My concern is threefold. First - for those infants who are denied the opportunity to live. Food bank for hunter To the Editor: I'm fortunate enough to live in a home overlooking Lake Scugog, able to observe daily the different forms of wildlife. Today I watched a family of ducks at the waters edge as they splashed, fed, and played, ob- viously enjoying the water and each other. Pleasant as it was to see, my heart ached to think that in a few Abortion denies life Second - for those who feel the pain of these infant deaths. Third - for our society which too often, it seems to me, values per- sonal convenience and material advantage above the value of the lives of those infants whose chance to live it deliberately denies. Sincerely, David Shepherd, Greenbank weeks many of these lovely little creatures would be nothing but a lump of bloody feathers. Surely, the so-called hunters are not that hungry, but if they are, then let's start a food bank for them. I can't believe anyone would shoot ducks just for "fun." Can you?
