pr ____ mm eee we High cost of land scaring industry from Scugog Twp. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 29, 1989 -- 9 THEY'RE HERE! USED RAILWAY TIES Large Quantity Special Is the high cost of land scar- ing industry away from Scugog Township and all of Durham Region? Some members of Town- ship council think so. Scugog Mayor Howard Hall said Monday that two large industries, employing up to 4,000 people, decided recent- ly not to open plants in Durham because the cost of housing was too high. "They decided to go else- where because the cost of land and housing for employees was too high in Durham," he said during Monday's council meet- ing. And Ward 2 councillor Mar- ilyn Pearce said industry is "leap frogging" over Durham to locate in cities like Kingston and Belleville for the same rea- sons. -- large selection of new patterns -- reasonable priges for supplies Stonehouse Folk Ant RR. 2, OARWOOD -- CORNER of HWY. 7 & 46 (2 Miles East of Manilla) -- OPEN HOUSE -- SEPTEMBER Sth, 9th, 10th -- classes for new & experienced painters -- 10 weeks, 3 hour classes morning or evening And she said Scugog may have a tough job attracting new industry when building lots are $40,000 more here than they arein Oshawa or Newcastle. Scugog is now working with the owner of land west of Port Perry to develop a "pres- tige industrial park." Area councillor Don Co- chrane said during Monday's meeting that the main reason housing has become so expen- sive in Port Perry is the lack of sewage treatment capacity. He suggested if the prob- lem with the lack of treatment capacity is resolved, more lots would be developed which in turn could result in a reduction in prices. But he added that would in turn lead to smaller lot, similar to the kind of developments in Pickering, Whitby or Ajax.
