34 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, September 6, 1989 Ouch! Hockey can be Summer's over. The kids are back at school, and for hun- dreds of thousands of kids across Canada, they are also back on theice. If you are a parent whose eight year old son Tommy (or daughter Tammy) decides to play hockey for the first time, selecting the right equipment is the most important step before he/she ever steps on the ice. Parents with little or no knowledge of the game who ven- ture into a sporting goods store to buy equipment for the first time will see a bewildering ar- ray of gear. Like most other consumer goods these days, significant technological advances have been made in the design and construction of hockey equip- ment. And prices have ad- vanced, too. There is no question that hockey is one of the most expen- sive sports these days. Life Saver Child Lifesaver, a first aid and CPR course for E.C.E. students, child care givers and new parents will be held Saturday, September 16, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 110 Ash St. Whitby. Last week, the Star asked Barry Johnston of Sportsland . in Port Perry to "outfit a typical eight-year old, top to bottom, in all new equipment in the mid- dle-of-the-road price range." d, but first he noted that if there is any part of the equipment where parents may want "to splurge," i.e., pay top [ies for top quality, it should be in the skates and the helmet. "If you can, get your child a decent pair of skates. Even a top uality pair of second hand skates may be better than poor quality new ones," he said. And he said that for the youngster who has never skat- ed before, molded skates are just fine. "They will provide ankle support for the beginner. But once a child gets his (her) skat- ing legs, I'd recommend going back to the conventional-style course register. This course has been especial- ly designed to assist you in the emergency care for children up to eight years of age. Including CPR for children and infants. 6 to 8 PM Skate exchange during registration. HEATHER HAYNES 985-2031 Saturday, September 9, 1989 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. VAN and TRUCK WORLD (LINDSAY) LTD. As for the helmet and face- mask, well, everybody wants maximum protection for the head and face. Anyway, here are the pric- es that Barry came up with. N.B. Parents should note that these are for "middle of road" quality equipment. And they should also not that by "shop- ping around" they may find the identical piece of equipment (brand name) for slightly less of Helmet and face mask, $80; neck guard, $30; shoulder pads, $200; elbow pads, $70; gloves $200; pants, $276; support, cup and garter belt, $20; shin pads, $100; socks, $10; practise jer- sey, $20; skates, $300; stick, $35 ($60 for an aluminum mod- el) tape, $2 and equipment bag, 350. Grand total of $1355 plus X. Registration fee will be the same $160, but if the youngster expensive is on a rep travelling team, count on up to $1,000 (perhaps more) out-of-pocket expenses over the season getting to out- of-town mes, tournaments and other incidental expenses. If these prices leave you numb, just be thankful, Jr. isn't agoalie. Next week, the Star will take a look at what it costs to out-fit a young Ringette player, and the price for figure skating. wom "499° VAN & TRUCK WORLD 295 Ritson Rd. This totals $3656. Add on the eight per cent sales tax, the $150 for registration fees, and the cost is nearly $550 to get Tommy/Tammy on theice. Over the course of the win- ter, plan on spending more for a new stick or two, trips to the arena (pop after the game) and possibly an all-day out-of-town tournament. But if the above prices scare you a bit, consider that the cost of equipping your youngster will increase as she grows bigger, and if the youngster gets into full contact hockey at the Pee Wee age group. We asked Barry to come up with a yard-stick list of prices for "the Cadillac" of equipment for a youngster playing full con- tact at the Pee Wee age group (12-13 years) - Are you ready for this?
