Er JAA he Sl RE I ENE a th SOR LACS RASS. ~ Port Pes aaa 18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 12, 1989 | Local couple prepares to hit the he highway Some morning early in Oc- tober, Bill and Jan Johnson will climb into the cab of their Ford truck, head in an easterly direc- tion and start driving. Just when the Well known couple will stop driv- ingis Say y's guess. act, they are not sure themselves. What they do know is that over the next six months to a year (maybe more) "home" will be a 32 foot "fifth wheel" trailer, and their destination wherever they want it to be. Bill and Jan are doing what a lot of couples their ages (he's 48, she's 46) secretly dream about. They have sold their home in Port Perry, most of their fur- niture, and will hit the open highway. "I guess you could say we are going to follow the sun, sort of....but we don't have any set itinerary or plans," Bill told the Star last week. Roughly speaking, he went on, they will first travel thro 0 the New England States, ma their way south to Florida as . the weather cools, and then west to the sun-belt States of Arizona, New Mexico and Tex- as. After that, perhaps, they will make their - way slowly north again, and possibly wind upin Alaska, Hitting the road in a Ford Diesel one-ton with "fifth wheel" trailer for an indefinite period of time was not a spur of the moment decision for Bill and Jan. In fact, they have been lanning this adventure for the ast five years. - And they said now is the ideal time to do it: their children are grown and on their own; they enjoy good health, and there really was nothing to pre- vent them doingit. In fact, she has taken that Michigan trail ride five differ- ent times and admits, it changed her outlook on life. ill and Jan have lived in Port Perry for the last 15 years. Bill worked 12 years as a DJ with CHOO radio in Ajax, and is well know in the area for his work with the band "Sweet Country." "People keep telling us we've 'got a lot of guts' to be do- ing this," explained Bill. - "When they say they can't afford to retire, my answer is, if you wait until you can afford it, you'll never doit, "And besides," he added. "We are not really retiring, we'll just be moving around for a while." They both agree that com- munications is going to be very important. "If one of us gets tired of the travel and says 'Tve had enough of this,' that's it, we'll just stop and come back. We have to be honest with each oth- er," said Jan. And when the journey fi- nally does come to an end, will Jan and Bill return to Port Perry, a community they both love dearly? * Perhaps, said Bill, though | he would like to buy some land (five to ten acres) in the Minden area. But that's all down the road, something that will take care of itself when the time comes. Asked whether they have any mis-givings or regrets about their decision, both re- plisd they wished they could ave jumped in the truck the day their house was sold. Waiting for about a month has been tough, but there were too many loose ends to tie up to allow them to sell the house one day and hit the road the next. vy Bill and Jan Johnson of Port Perry will be hittin open road soon on an "extended vacation" that cou he as long as year. They sold their house, most of thelr furni- ture, and early next month will take off in their "fifth wheel" traller to "follow the sun" or wherever the road takes them. See story for detalls. . A first for Cawker School This column is one of the many firsts for S.A. Cawker School and since the eagle is our school sym- bol we chose the title Eagle Expressions. Our school mission statement is "Fostering spirited excellence in a caring community," As a reflec- tion of that statement we want to use this regular column to share examples of excellence, a sense of our spirit and reports of our ac- tivities with the large communi- ty in which the school is a part. At S.A. Cawker we have had a lot of firsts. Like other schools we had the excitement of the first day of school but we also had the first time in our new building, the first time to use brand new materials and equipment, the first time to be together as students and staff. In spite of some inconveniences it was wonderful to observe the sense of pride and enthusiasm of the staff, students, parents and workmen. Mrs. Cochrane's grade three class has captured that spirit for all of us in the first of these Eagle Expressions. The first day of school was a lit- tle wierd: "But today is a lot bet- ter because the class does not have hard work. I haven't been in trouble yet. "The washroom is pretty cool - make no doubt about it! Scott Gerrow There are very nice people here especially Sherry Spoford. She has an electric wheelchair. We work together and help each other. 1 have lots of friends. The work is easy, too! I like math a lot. We're working on bears. It is a fun school. It's great. Thank you. Leanne Thomas It started when I got to the S.A. Cawker P.S. I'm having a nice time. My class is alright. I hope it goes the same for the rest of the year.
