Local artist displays work until Sept. 29 at library A Blackstock-area resident is displaying her works of art at the Scugog Memorial Public Li- brary this month. Donna Griffin-Smith is dis- playing over 30 watercolor paintings. ° Donna enjoys painting land- scapes. Many of the paintings are of places she has travelled to "I like to travel anywhere, but mostly in Canada," Donna told the Star. "I like to paint what I've seen," she added. "Some of the paintings are places we've camped or travelled through." Many of her paintings are of wooded parklands in Eastern Canada. The exhibit also features a se- lection of wildflower paintings. Donna started painting wild- flowers a year ago. Her collec- tion includes trilliums, violets, waterlilies, and black-eyed Su- sans. One painting titled Tulip Garden is unmistakenly differ- ent from all the other works in Donna's collection. She explained that while she was at an art workshop, the in- structor told the students to throw some colors on the paper. They were then instructed to look at the mess of colors and decide what it might be. A few more strokes of the brush and the painting was complete. The finished piece appears to have taken hours of planning and preparation. Donna said it takes her about Information missing from CWY story Information was missing from a story that appeared on page 24 of the Port Perry Star on Wednesday, Sept. 6. Two area families hosting Canada World Youth Jana. pants from Canada and Ecua- dor were omitted from the story. Bob and Ruth Powell, and Marvin .Stevenson and Kath McKay are also hosting partici- pants. . The Star regrets any incon- venience caused because of the we . omiBEIOD, in Lhe four hours to paint a medium- sized watercolor painting. She then hangs the painting on a wall and studies it for days, weeks or months. This helps her find areas of the painting that require fine tuning. "Sometimes it's just a tiny, tiny thing like making an area darker or lighter but it makes a difference," she explained. Donna took art during high school but never pursued her in- terest at university. She told the Star that she re- turned to painting about 10 years ago, working with oils. Donna enrolled in a night school art class at Port Perry High School and became good friends with many of the other students. After the course was com- plete, Donna and six others formed a group called the Real- ist Seven and displayed their work together at many art shows. It wasn't until four or five years ago that she started try- ing watercolors. This is her third show this year. Earlier her paintings were on exhibit at the Family Wellness Clinic and the Grace Gallery, both in Whitby. Donna said she has started making contact with other gal- leries for more showings. "I can't hang them all at home," she said. "There isn't enough room." She is continuing to take courses and hopes to someday teach art to students. PORT PERRY CLINIC would like to introduce Ms. J. GliaT Be PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 12, 1989 -- 21 Scugog Christian School Wow! A whole summer has passed and another year is about to begin. There has been a great deal of excitement and activity taking place at our school these past two weeks. Through the faithful work of a number of dedicated men and women, two portables have been brought to the school, set up, repaired, painted and cleaned. In the midst of the paint brushes, hammers and mops, the teachers have been meeting at the school and getting ready for the new year. Once again, our Lord has taken care of us in ways that we could not have imagined. We have a great deal to be thankful for. On August 26th, the entire school body: parents, school children, younger brothers and sisters, and teachers and spouses met at Pat and Ernie Guenther's for an afternoon of swimming, playing games and making and renewing acquaintances. This was followed by a corn and wiener roast, then coffee and donuts! Our 'Meet The Teachers' evening a week later was well attended and enabled parents and students alike to view our expanded facilities and brouse through this years' ciriculum. So, by September 5th, former students and newcomers Ss tart a Corn and wiener roast starts new school year felt at ease with the surroundings, and we all enjoyed the Opening Assembly at 9 a.m. that day. Kindergarten "screening test" took place Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday on a one-to-one basis and Friday was a regular day for that class. The rest of the school got down to business immediate- ly, and things appear to be runn- ing smoothly. Our attendance for this year is seventy-three students in Kindergarten to grade 8. We have 4 full-time teachers and 4 part-time teachers, as well as a secretary 5 mornings per week. We have 2 busses running again this year: a 'north' route that begins near Sunderland, and a Port Perry-Blackstock- Manchester route. We welcomed new families to our midst this year: Rev. and Mrs. David Daniels and their children Scott, Rebecca and Elizabeth; Mr. and Mrs. Ron Nieuwstraten and Gar- rett; Mr. and Mrs. Bob and Ruth Powell and their daughter Lori; Gelf and Hilda VanderGast and their children Justin and Nicole; Mr. and Mrs. John Batterink and their daughter Laura; Mr. and Mrs. Andy Mulden and their daughter Stephanie; Mr. and Mrs. Gary Vander Meulen and their daughter Jennifer.
