Prior to the presentations, Durham Region Police Chief Dave Edwards praised all the award winners calling them "citizens who placed their own lives in danger to assist the po- lice or their fellow citizens." For Mr. DeGeer, his tussle with the runaway truck began last December 13 as he was leaving a restaurant in Sunder- land. A five ton stake truck was rolling, without a driver, down River Street, heading right for busy Highway 12. He jumped on the running board, but found to his dismay the truck was locked. Somehow, using his knees and weight, he managed to veer the wheels to change the direc- tion of the truck. As it was, it narrowly missed hitting parked car and pedestrian, clipped off a hydro pole and then finally came to rest against a tree. Without these actions by Mr. DeGeer, the truck almost certainly would have rolled onto Highway 12 and the result could have been an accident causing serious injury or death. The citation about Mr. De- Geer, who is a mechanic, con- cluded :his quick actions saved - what could have been a horren- dous situation." Brock Township Mayor Don Hadden presented Mr. De- Geer with a plaque at the Awards Night.
