14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 26, 1989 Comics, cards, books specialty at new store Up until four years ago, n Jorgensen made his living as a management consultant helping other people open new stores and business. . The pace was hectic and time consuming and one day his wife Louise said to him "why don't you open a store of your own." Ron thought about it for a while and when a suitable loca- tion came up in Markham, "Twice Told Tales" was launched, offering hardcovers, paperbacks, records, CD's base- ball cards and comics. On September 16, Ron and Louise opened their second store with the same name in the Port Perry Plaza. Along with a wide assort- ment of top quality used paper- backs, "Twice Told Tales" is be- coming a mecca for collectors of comic books and baseball cards. "We will cater to the seri- ous collector. If we don't stock something, we can order it," Ron told the Star in an inter- view at the new store last week. Just in case you were not aware of it, collecting such things as comics and baseball cards has become a serious busi- ness in recent years. In fact, in the United * * %* * * 399 Queen St. © Stonemooy AHS Care genrst® States, collecting comic is now the number one hobby, more popular than stamps or coins. Just how serious comic col- lectors take their hobby is. evi- dent by some of the prices. For example, an issue of Batman that last year sold over the counter for $1 is now priced at $60 at Twice Told Tales. This particular issue is the "Death of Robin." And of course the Batman comics this sum- mer are especially popular due to the enormous commercial success of the movie. And if you should ever stumble upon an authentic is- sue of the first Batman comic published way back in 1939, count yourself lucky, because it is worth a coal $20,000. But that is not the most sought after comic by serious collectors. The first "Superman" is- sue, published in 1937 is worth $40,000 (US) There are only seven known copies. Twice Told Tales stocks a wide line of new comics, which come out on a regular basis, and several different kinds of base- ball cards. Ron says that this year "Upper Deck" cards are very popular with collectors. * * * * Port Perry, Ont. Stonemoor provides a Child Enrichment Program for children 18 months to 9 years. Or the card with the double exposure photo of Dale Murphy showing a bat resting on both shoulders will fetch $150, if you can find one. For serious collectors of baseball cards, consider the Bowman series Mickey Mantle from 1951, the year the legend broke into the major leagues. It is worth about $4,000. Though Ron said he has a tremendous interest in both cards and comics, he is not a col- lector. "It is not a good idea to col- lect what you sell," he said with a laugh, "or you wouldn't sell a thing." The most popular comics these days are Batman, X-Men and Spiderman. In all, the store carries about 30 different comic titles with new issues out every Friday. As for the paperbacks, Ron said he is very fussy when it comes to the quality of the used books her carries. "I make sure they are in top condition," he said. : And the stores has a wide selection of topics ranging from general fiction to special inter- est such as cooking, gardening, religion and health. Twice Told Tales will pur- chase or trade used paperbacks and hard covers, along with the comics. Though the Port Perry store has been open just a couple of weeks, Ron told the Star he is pleased with the re- ponse from the public. And he expects business will pick up once more le become aware of the kinds of books, comics and cards the store stocks.
