Merrill, Valerie, Aileen and Wilma VanCamp enjoyed a holi- day last week to the Agawa Ca- nyon to view the coloured leaves. begins services by Mrs. Earl Reader The Annual "Harvest Home" old fashioned church service at the museum "Memorial Head" Church was well attended on Sun- day evening when we were bless- ed with a perfect weather-wise evening as a conclusion to a beautiful autumn weekend. Rev. Atkinson who has a sum- mer home at Prentice's Sunset Beach conducted the morning service at the Island United Church. Next Sunday, Thanksgiving, the new minister Rev. Lynn Belfry-Graham of Sunderland will begin services for the Scugog Pastoral charge. It's a long time since we've had a Graham on the Island. Even then, she won't be living in the manse. Now we have three special Sun- days in a row as Oct. 15 will be the Anniversary Sunday for the Island United when Rev. Barry Pogue of Durham Collete returns Jeep Scugog Island Area News by Mrs. Earl Reader to us in his ministerial services. I'm sure we'll all be pleased to welcome him again. The service will start at 10:30 a.m. not 10:00 as formerly advertised. After the service there will be lunch and a social time across the corner at the Community Hall. On Sunday we were pleased to see that nature has finally reviv- ed the beauty of the flowers around the Island United Church and the workers realize their ef- forts were not in vain: The meeting of Conc. 10 from East & West is a busy corner these days as new exits on to the main road are finally being built to improve safety hazards. I'm sure this couldn't happen too soon either for the residents and hall users on that corner. No further news this week. AJAX JEEP EAGLE LTD. SALES & SERVICE 493 BAYLY STREET EAST, AJAX, ONTARIO L1S 4S7 I'm sorry to say some people look upon this column as a gossip column, if names are mentioned. Others feel it is a way of express- ing interest, appreciation, best wishes, sympathy and a way of keeping in touch with past & former friends as well as current events. We do not wish to include anything that might be personal or considered as gossip. Grace U.C.W. will meet Wed., Oct. 4 at the church - all ladies are cordially invited to attend. This coming Sunday please come and welcome our new minister - Rev. Lynn Belfry- Graham. Happy Thanksgiving. TO t 1008 JO GRAV aanpeert - PAL YZ TAL 3 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 3, 1989 -- 19 They returned by Michigan U.S.A. stopping at the German town of Frankenmuth on the Mackinac Island. With no cars on the Island all sight seeing was by horse and carriage. Blackstock was a very busy place over the weekend with the Central Ontario Rabbit Show held in the arena and the C.B. Radio Club held at the Rec. Centre on Sunday. Large crowed attended both events. Welcome back to Blackstock to Valerie VanCamp who has mov- ed from her Toronto apartment. She will commute to her job in the city. The Blackstock and District Lioness Club held its first meeting of the season on September 13 at the home of the President Ethel Lafontaine. Twenty-two members including the two newly inducted members were in attendance. The group is selling Microwave Cookbooks for $8.00 available from Ethel at 986-4629. The group catered to the wedding of Kevin and Rhonda Trapp a week ago. The annual trip to Samco Toy Factory and the Sears Warehouse will take place on Friday October 20 leaving Blackstock Rec. Centre at 9 a.m. and returning by 6 p.m. To register for this trip at a very nominal fee call Joanne Russell at 986-5249. The next meeting will be the form of a Halloween party on Oct. 11 at the home of Gloria Smuck. In celebration of the 150th an- niversary of Toronto Diocese of the Anglican Church a cross is be- ing carried to the many churches in the Diocese. On Sunday it was in this area. This cross which has been carried by many means of transportation to over 300 chur- ches was carried from the Recreational Centre to the St. John's Anglican Church and then back up to the United Church where the congregation joined the group for a hymn, a prayer and a short talk of information of the event. From there it was carried to North Blackstock from where shortly it travelled by truck to the Port Perry Anglican Church and later on to the Anglican Church at Brooklin. Plans are made to carry it into the Skydome for a special service on Oct. 15 or later if the Dome is unavailable on that date. Congratulations to Kirk McKee and Anette Wichlo who were mar- ried by Rev. D. Davis in the Blackstock United Church on Sat. September 30. The reception and dance was held in Nestleton Hall. Congratulations also to Kevin Trapp and Rhonda White who were married in Blackstock United Church on Sat. Sept. 23 with Rev. Donald Tansley presiding due to Rev. D. Davis' absence. Kevin and Rhonda's reception and dance was held in the Blackstock Rec. Centre. Best wishes to both of these young couples. After a lovely lunch was serv- ed by the Afternoon Unit ladies, the September 26 General UCW meeting was opened by Presi- dent, Jean Adams. Jean Kyte opened the Devotional by reading "Where Joy Abounds."" The Hymn, "Joyful, Joyful" was sung prior to the meditation based on Psalm 118: v. 24. We should all remember that the true joy of life is in the trip itself, not the destina- tion. The offering was received and dedicated. Following the discussion of business, Gwenyth Thompson presented her beautiful memorial tribute to Norma VanCamp, a faithful ac- tive UCW member, who passed away on June 24, 1989. She is tru- ly missed. Eileen McLaughlin. then introduced our guest speaker, Dr. A. Hackner, Port Perry optometrist. She showed slides and spoke of her volunteer optical work in Third World Coun- tries. Old glasses may be left at Dr. Hackner's office any time to be used in this desperately need- ed venture. Our appreciation for Dr. Hackner's message was ex- pressed by Peggy Larmer. Jean Kyte pronounced the benediction, bringing the meeting to a close. = ei io i: - Now available only at Port Perry's own MEATING PLACE NEW YORK DELI STYLE OO ---------------- A TTI WARNING:DO NOT ORDER DOUBLE (416) 683-4100 Eagle | Oshawa [418) 434-1610 SALES: Monday to Thursday 9 to 9; Friday & Saturday 9 to 5.
