Local racing fans get an oppor- tunity to cheer for a local per- former in the Labatt's Blue On- tario Sires Stakes at Kawartha Downs on Thursday, October 5th. Tantallon Celtic, a two year old son of Balanced Image is owned by Donna and Glen Van Camp and Wayne Dowson of Port Perry. Dowson handles the training and some of the driving. Dowson, who had an excellent pacing filly, Graceful Swinger, is no stranger to the world of harness racing. Graceful Swinger made $191,500. in the Ontario Sires Stakes. When the Van Camps and Dowson shelled out $130,000. for Tantallon Celtic this Spring, they were taking quite a gamble. It's paid off so far. Going into next Thursday's 0.S.S. event, Tantallon Celtic has banked $84,211. from five wins and four seconds. He took a per- sonal mark of 2:01.1 at Mohawk Raceway on September 18. When asked about the colt, Dowson said "he's a strong colt...never gets tired" and went on to say "we gave him a three week rest (Ausust 24-September 18) and only qualified him once." He looked right at home in the qualifier at Kawartha Downs with a twenty-five length win in 2:03.2 (last 2 in :59.3). The colt giving Tantallon Celtic the most trouble is A Worthy Lad. The son of Worthy Bowl is undefeated in 13 lifetime starts. Trained and driven by veteran Bud Fritz, he's earned $131,898. His last win was a personal mark, 2:00.3 at Sarnia on Sunday, September 24. A Worthy Lad is owned by Dr. Joseph Johnston of Oldcastle.
