Lois Hoftyzer was referring to a special young girl named Amberlee Dobbs when she spoke those words last week. Since mid-summer, Lois and her husband Frank, have been Amberlee's foster parents. They have opened their Shirley Road home. But per- haps more important, they have opened their arms. ° Amberlee, who turned ten this summer has cerebral pal- sey. She is unable to walk or talk. When not attending class full time at Prince Albert School, she needs a lot of care, but care with a lot of affection and love thrownin. Last May, the Port Perry Star carried an article and pho- to about Amberlee and how the Oshawa and District Associa- tion for Community Living was looking hard for a foster family in this area. Amberlee had been attend- ing class at Prince Albert School for the last four years, and the Association feltit critical for her progress and development that this continuity at school not be broken. Lois Hoftyzer read the arti- cle and immediately contacted the Association. "I didn't even tell my hus- band, Frank. It was something I felt we should do," she related to the Star last week. When she showed Frank the article last May and told him that she already had con- tacted the Association, he nod- ded his head in agreement, she said. After a long and careful screening progress, Frank and Lois become Amberlee's foster parents this summer. Her classes at Prince Al- bert have not been disrupted, she is getting along very well and Frank and Lois are delight- ed to have the chance to care for Amberlee. "We like to take her out a lot, let people see her and get to know her, especially other chil- dren. They always ask a lot of questions like why can't she walk or talk," explained Lois. Aside from an exterior wheelchair ramp to the front door, no other physical renova- tions were needed at the Hoftyz- er home for Amberlee. She's a big girl with a win- ning smile that brightens up any room and melts any heart. She loves to play on the liv- ing room rug, chuckles and laughs when someone tickles her feet or rubs her back. The day begins early at the Hoftyzer hog and crop farm. Amberlee is up about 6:00 AM, has breakfast and then gets ready to catch the 8:00 AM bus that takes her to class at Prince Albert School. Perhaps it was the new people around her and the new surroundings. But the initial difficulties quickly passed, and within a few days, she was settling in comfortably with her new foster parents. Amberlee's mother Debra, is able to visit often, to spend what she called "quality time" with her daughter. "Without this family (Lois and Frank) I would not be able to continue to work and provide her with the full time care she needs," said Debra. Lois, who has four grown sons from a previous marriage, is a health care aid who has worked with the elderly and children with special care needs. . Lois is convinced that some day Amberlee may be able to walk on her own, perhaps with leg braces. And she is also convinced that with constant stimulation and attention, Amberlee even- tually will begin to talk. She has responded "ya" to a question and said "hi," and Lois thinks that is just the begin- ning. In the meantime, Lois and Frank are doing something they enjoy greatly: caring for someone special.
