"» Lr Mayor will fight for rail service (From page 1) several communities in Dur- ham Region, including Scugog. With areas like Durham east of Metro experiencing rap- id growth, the Mayor said now is a "natural opportunity for GO Transit to get involved" in this rail line. The Via service from Toron- to to Havelock was among nu- merous lines across Canada which got the axe last week by the federal government. Mayor Hall said the federal announcement didn't come as any great surprise to him, but he thought the line would con- tinue until March, rather than Letters to the editor January 156. He agreed that the Jan. 156 cut-off doesn't give GO Transit or any other provincial agency much time to take over the ser- vice. Meanwhile, the president of the Toronto-Havelock Pas- sengers Association termed the federal announcement last week as "grossly unfair to the province of Ontario and the rid- ers who use that service." It is not fair for the federal government to give the province just 50 days to replace the ser- vice, said Paul Pagnuelo. He went on to say that members of the Passenger Asso- ciation are furious with the fed- eral transport department and minister Benoit Bouchard for apparently ignoring a business plan the Association prepared which lists numerous ways the line could operate more effec- tively. "We are going to continue to demand some answers from this (federal) government," said Mr. Puegnelo. He termed the decision to axe the line in Ja- nauary as "devestating" for the people use the service daily to commute to their jobs in Toron- to. I was under the impres- sion the general idea of them was human interest, local news and of course possibly a personal event that the writers would like to share with readers if they felt it was something we'd all have in common. (Such as annoyances over delays in doctors offices, or visits to our dentists). Obviously they are doing what good writers are trained to do, and that's spark some interest and get the public's attention.
