«w 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 11, 1989 a TA Impressive start to another Junior C hockey campaign MoJacks sail to 11-3 win over the Chiefs The Port Perry ModJacks bolted out of the starting gate in a big hurry Sunday night at the Scugog Arena as they pounded thge Lakefield Chiefs 11-3 to open the Central Junior C sea- son on a positive note. The MoJacks were never in trouble during this game as they opened a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. They padded the lead to 9-3 after the middle frame, and added two short-handed in a chippy third period that fea- tured numerous penalties. The ModJdacks were full marks for their opening night effort, and without taking any- thing away from this effort, it is fair to say the Chiefs were sur- prisingly weak. pp vg The Junior C hockey Lee, a long time game. season In Port Per fan was on hand to dro captain Brad Menzies and Joe Sullivan of t easily 11-3. The previous night, Lake- field surrendered a dozen goals in a 12-10 loss to the Little Brit- ain Merchants. But it's going to be a long season and the ModJacks will gladly tuck two points in the bag at the Chiefs expense. As might be expected when the red light goes on 11 times, several players were prominent on the score sheet for the Mo- Jacks. Forward John Harman hit for the hat trick and chipped in with two assists. And the MoJacks got just a superb performance from new- comer Rob Willetts. m his spot on defense, Willetts clicked for three goals and two assists, and with a little luck around the Chief net, he easily might have had two or three more goals. Steve Connors had three assists and Todd Taylor helped out on two of the MoJack goals. For the visitors, Bruce Maxwell had two and Todd Didsbury a single. The MoJacks were without sniper Warren Geer who is on the last game of a two match suspension, and their fine de- fenseman Chris Arsenault, also out due to suspension from last year's playoff round. Both are expected to return to the lineup for this coming weekend. Newcomer Dwayne Mackie got the start in the goal for the ModJacks, and though he wasn't over-worked, he had to be sharp on several occasions, especially in the middle frame when the Chiefs fired 16 shots in his di- rection. The ModJacks kept Chief netminder Todd Rogers hop- ping most of the evening as they un-leashed 52 shots. Things got a little testy in the final period with the game obviously in the bag for the Mo- Jacks, and there were a couple of minor skirmishes. The MoJacks got a bit of a scare late in the game when for- ward Todd Taylor was run vi- ciously into the end boards. But he managed to leave the ice un- der his own steam and suffered abruised back. The Chiefs Dids- bury took a five minute charg- ing penalty for this infraction. It appears as if league offi- cials are going to clamp down very hard on boarding and checking from behind infrac- tions this year. Earlier in the game, the ModJacks Kevin Desrosiers took a five minute major and a game misconduct for running a Lake- field player into the boards. gog Arona. it was the home opener for the team which got Oli to a quick start en route to an 11-3 victo over - ing Lakefield Chiefs. y Wie vish The opening night crowd for the home opener was sparse. Perhaps fans were nursing their beer at home after watch- ing the Blue Jays tumble. SLAPSHOTS: Though the game against the Chiefs Sun- day was a walk-over for the Mo- Jacks, there were several very positive indications. This is a veteran MoJack squad with a ~ dozen players from last season. Some of the newcomers had impressive debuts. Willetts with his five points; Paul Wil- kins on defense looked very calm and steady; forward Dar- ren Lee skated miles and did some fine forechecking, as did Todd Taylor, who also had sev- eral fine scoring chances. It's nice to see a couple of lo- cal players, Kevin Gibson and John Lally in the line-up, and Jim Vernon, who may see a fair amount of action as an "AP." On the forward lines, Len Giacalone and Steve Durham are both hard-nosed guys who add some muscle along the boards andin the corners. And the MoJacks will obvi- ously be counting on Menzies, Harman and Geer to pick up where they left off last season by giving opposition goalies fits and nightmares. Steve Connors, Chris Ed- mondson, Chris Arsenault, and Bill Lawrenson are all proven defenseman with tons of experi- ence. Netminding will be shared by Dwayne Mackie and Brad Bricknell, and obviously, they will play a key role in the team's fortunes this season. The ModJacks hit the ice twice this coming weekend. On Saturday night, they will be in Bowmanville to tackle the Ea- gles, who have a lot of veterans in the line-up. Dwayne Rombough did his best to bring Tripp back into the game as he scored Tripps only goal unassisted. This was a fast paced game considering each team had only 2 spares each sitting on the bench.
