pe The Port Perry Goreski Ban- tam 1's took part in a Unionville tournament over the Thanksgiv- ing weekend and managed to get home for Turkey as they lost a heart breaker to Orangeville on Sunday. Port's first game was a classic for they were matched up to their rival Bracebridge. Port was pumped up for this game and we could imagine coach Wilbur was too. He and a friend had tickets to the Blue Jay game so we had to accomplish the mission under coach Lee Wilbur's belt. Lee, Warren and Hilly got us going and told us we had to throw bone crun- ching body checks in order to keep up to the Bracebridge boys. It also was the first time to play on jet ice and I think the whole team skated better on it. At the 5:12 mark Traynor pop- ped a shot over the Bracebridge goalies shoulder to tie the game at one. Logan assisted on Traynor's mark. Bracebridge then took the lead again but at the 13:41 mark of the second, Parry beat the goalie low to the stick side, to tie it up again at two. Moase and Logan got the puck to Parry who scored. At the 11:16 point of the third frame Moase scored a beauty from the side of the net as he slap- ped it in. J. Cochrane passed to McBride in the corner who thread the needle to Moase and Port was ahead 3-2. A power play goal. Bracebridge then scored to tie it again. We had lost gas in the third and ended up with a tie. Larocque played between the pipes and was superb stopping blasts from Bracebridge's point with his glove hand. Port's next game was played 5 hours later at 5:30 p.m. and coach Wilbur was there as the Jays game had ended. He wasn't too happy about the Jaybirds loss but was ready to play good, hard, smart hockey. The Goreski In- sulators took the ice and filled Markhams net with a half dozen pucks. This was a high scoring game for Port. Scoring Port's goals were Empringham (2), and lone markers: went to J. Cochrane, Bricknell, Pashley, Traynor and McBride. Assists went to Laird (2), McBride (2), Logan (3), Empringham (2), and Parry (1). Hutchinson played well in the cage and stopped some hard shots. On Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Port Pee Wees tie 1-1 Port Perry Pee Wee 1's, spon- sored by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 419, have opened strong- ly in the 1989-90 hockey season. Coaches Garry Geer, Ed Teno and Jim Burnett have assembled a smooth skating and passing team which, although lacking in- dividual size, has good average size and promises to produce an exciting brand of hockey. The team tuned up for the season by beating the Oshawa Major Red Wings twice last week by 4-1 and 4-3 scores. Goal scorers in these two games were: Sean Ellis (2), Jeremy Geer (2), Ken- ton LeFort (2), Jay King and Chad Kearns. Friday night, Port opened the Lakeshore League season at home against arch-rival Cobourg. After a late first period power play goal gave Cobourg the lead, strong pressure by the Sean Ellis, Jay Tredway, Chad Kearns line paid off. with Jay scoring an unassisted goal. In the second period, the Ken- ton LeFort, Neil Mueller, Billy Zaparanuik line created an oppor- tunity for Jeremy Norton to move in from the point and alertly fire a nice goal from the corner, Neil drawing the assist. Chad then gave Port a 3-1 lead, scoring unassisted after Sean had won a face-off in the Cobourg end. Un- fortunately, a third period rally netted Cobourg the 2 goals they needed to result in a 3-3 final score. The overall performance against a perenially strong team was excellent, as the line of Craig Laird, Joe Broadworth and Jason Phillips, who filled in well for the suspended Dave Bourgeois also put in excellent efforts and the defence of Scott Heasman, Jay King, Matt Morris and Jeremy Norton were steady at both ends of the ice. Steve Gilbert and Mike Pashley split the goaltending and both came up big when called on. Monday night, a league game in Uxbridge showed the results of Thanksgiving turkey and an ear- ly morning practise. The team produced a commendable effort but lacked the finish as they con- trolled play by a considerable margin before settling for a 1-1 tie. Neil Mueller set up his own score by making a nice rush, feeding Billy Zap and tipping in the return pass. Kenton LeFort also drew an assist on the play. The Legionaires return to ac- tion when Port Hope comes to town Friday at 9:15. We outplayed, out hit, outskated and outmanned them as they on- ly had 3 extras. Their goalie often stalled time so their team could get a breather. It didn't help though as Port whipped St. Thomas 4-2. Scoring Port's goals were McBride (2), Laird (1), and Gavin Cochrane who scores a goal like this every year, ripped a slapshot from his won blue line to the top shelf of St. Thomas' net. Way to let her howl Big Gave! ~~ This mark by G. Cochrane put Port ahead 3-2, and in the drivers seat as a St. Thomas player took a penalty after this. McBride capatalized as he usually does when there's an open net and picked the far corner from the red line. Assists went to J. Cochrane (2), McBride (1),. and Empr- ingham (1). McBride played his usual Yzerman game racking up 3 points. Defensive play was fine as Vander Slagt, Bricknell, Traynor, and G: Cochrane shook the arena while throwing their weight around. Larocque played net in this one and played well. The final game of the weekend for the Insulators was played against a fast, hard-hitting Orangeville team. Port had them 3-0 going into the third but lost it in the end. This proved to be the game that allowed the Bantams to get home for Turkey dinner. Goal scorers were Laird (2), McBride (1). Assists went to Bricknell, Empringham and PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 11, 1989 -- 23 Turkey no compensation for Port Bantams Parry. After this tough loss coach Wilbur told us he now knows what we have to work on in practice. Conditioning is important to the squad as we couldn't keep up to them in the end. Wilbur also said we have the chemistry to be a winner and he likes what he sees. Introducing the Bantam No. 1 Insulators in order of position: goalies Rick Hutchinson, and Shawn Larocque, defense Corey Bricknell, Simon Traynor, Dar- rell Vander Slagt and Gavin Cochrane, centre' Jason Cochrane, Duane Empringham and Dave Pashley, wingers, Jeff Parry, Steve Laird, Jason Broomball In Port Perry Broomball League action on Sunday, two teams came away with shut- outs. Grieve picked up a goal and one assist, and R. Redman had the other marker. Assists in this one were re- corded by B. Pratt with two, C. Kuning, and G. Bryans. R. Wagar netting a pair for the winners and J. Monsma collecting the other goal. Assists went to I. Down and K. Fraser with two each and a single to M. Down. D.
