24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 11, 1989 Quite a season for Port Perry Mosquito girls Homestead Furniture Girls Mosquito Soccer team played its final game on Thursday Sept. 28, against Ajax. The gals fell behind 1-0 in the first half. After a quick pep talk at half time the Furniture gals came out and completely dominated play in the second half. The Ajax goalie made many saves to keep her team in the lead. Finally, Kelly Phipps con- nected on a nice crossing pass from Shawna Cornish to tie the score 1-1, The second half ended with no further scoring. With the evening light fading quickly it was decid- ed the teams would play overtime (2x10 halves) on Friday night back in Ajax. Once again on Friday night our girls dominated play but couldn't score. The overtime ended with the teams still tied 1-1. Each team chose 5 players to take part in a shoot-out to decide the outcome. Sara Cosway and Kelly Phipps scored for Homestead while Julie Ball held Ajax to just one goal, giving Homestead Furniture the win and advancing to the final in Ajax against Pickering on Satur- day Sept. 30. Saturday afternoon found Homestead gals back playing their third game in three days. Pickering Village the opposition was strong on defence. Kelly Phipps scored from Sara Cosway and Shawna Cornish to give Homestead a 1-0 lead. Pickering played strong and scored two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the se- cond half. In the second half solid play by Lisa Dodd, Emily Cosway, Elizabeth Scallon kept the ball up the field and Kelly Phipps scored again with Shawna Cornish and Sara Cosway assisting. The score remained 2-2 until late in the second half when Pickering scored to take a 3-2 lead. Homestead gals were show- ing the effects of playing 3 games in 3 days and were unable to come back with any offense. Pickering Village ended up with the Cam- pionship 3-2. All team members received trophies for being regular season league winners and also for runners-up in the playoffs. Team record was 17 wins and ofie loss. Congratulations! Mens Hockey Game one on this Thanksgiving weekend was a wide open affair in which J&D Carpentry defeated Anderson's 6-4. Leading the way for J&D were, Dave Milton with the "hat trick," and 1 assist, Bill Bridge 1 goal, 4 assists, Tony Patton 1 goal, 1 assist, and Joe Curran one goal. Doug Brown Picked up a single assist. ~ Fighting back for Anderson's were Ken Little 1 goal, 2 assists, Doug Suppelsa 2 goals, 1 assist, and Jason Warner 1 goal. Other assists to Rob Kroonenberg 2, Col- in Asselstine, Sean Kenny and Chris Brain 1 apiece. The second game of the day saw Compton Cable T.V. edge out Larocque Electric 3-1 with two third period goals. Scoring for Compton were Wayne Fox, Carl Fitzgerald, and Dave Mann. Assisting were Carl Durward 2 and Mike Adam one. The lone marker for Larocque was Bill Haynes from Larry Jackson. Game three was a close check- 2444 L444 Laas ing affair and a slower paced one in which Norton's shutout Crandell's 2-0. Counting for Norton's were Bill Van Camp from Terry Rose and John Woodward, and Brian Nor- ton from Mark Jobb and Bill Van Camp. Recording the shutout for Nor- ton's and playing a fine game bet- ween the pipes was Don Card. The fourth game opened up 'somewhat as Sportsland lost their first game by a score of 5-4 to Blanchard's Supply Co. Scorers for Blanchard's were Dan Horner 2 goals, 3 assists, Richie LeFort 1 goal, 3 assists, Mike Driscoll 1 goal, 1 assist, and Dave Dickson one goal. Helpers were Jody Peters and Bruce Smith. Tallying for Sportsland were Rob Beveridge 1 goal, 1 assist, Randy Prosser 1 goal, 1 assist, Wayne Taylor and Ken Smart each with one goal.
