Mr. Polonsky spoke to the students about the rapid changes going on in the world today, and the greater opportu- nities for women and anyone with a god education. He explained that the job market was changing for four basic reasons; fierce global com- petition, new technology, fami- ly structures and population patterns. Mr. Polonsky said, "knowl- edge is vital ... there are too few people for the jobs today. " A good education will take you ar. He sited statistics which indicate that one third of high school entrants never gradu- ate. Once you are out of high school you should get right into post secondary education. "The world is too tough to wait today," he said. Among the growing fields is manufac- turing. "Companies are beg- ging for technicians, technolo- gists and journeymen." Perry High Sherry Bassin talked about his childhood in Sas- katchewan. As he was grow- ing up, all he ever heard from his immigrant parents was that he was going to school. He learned that education was one of the most important things he could acquire in his life. The other was to show re- spect, for in that way you re- ceived respect. Mr. Bassin spoke of two types of people in the world, those who stand up and make decisions for themselves about their futures, or those who just letit happen to them. His advice was, "don't let it happen, make it happen." De- cide on what career you want now, and work towardsiit. Even "C" students can get into, and be successful at Col- lege or University today. If you want something to happen, you canmake it happen. Students interested in finding out more about post secondary education should speak to their guidance coun- sellor, and try to visit the schools they are interested in. Durham College will be having an open house on Octo- ber 23 from nine to nine, all are welcome. Another successful motorcyclist toy run by Rob Streich Last Friday while most people were thinking of turkey, the Oshawa Harley Owners Group members were thinking of Christmas. The annual Toy Run was held - successfully again this year, raising $1989.00 and col- lecting 238 toys for the Salva- tion Army Christmas Cheer Fund. "Not bad for a bunch of bi- kers," commented Betty Cor- nelius chairperson of the event. Well over 100 motorcy- clists of all shapes, sizes and ages participating in the run, parading through Oshawa proudly displaying their toy do- nation. Donating a toy gave each biker free admission to the dance at the Oshawa Legion Hall that evening. Fundraising came from the sale of T-shirts and raffle tickets. Air endorsement mandatory here Ontario drivers operating vehicles equipped with air brakes must now have a valid air brake endorsement on their driver's licence, Ontario Transportation Minister William Wyre announc- ed Sept. 19. The endorsement was to have become mandatory May 1, but a four-month extension was granted on the compliance date. "This postponement provided those drivers who had not yet ob- tained the 'Z' endorsement on their driver's licence with addi- tional time to qualify under the provisions of the program," said Wrye. The program is designed to en- sure that drivers of vehicles equipped with air brakes unders- tand how the brakes work, how to use them safely and how to tell when they are not working properly. "Implementation of this pro- gram meets one of the re- quirements of the National Safe- ty Code for Motor Carriers," Wyre said. "It is among the many safety initiatives developed by my Ministry to help reduce the number of commercial vehicle accidents in this Province." Drivers wishing to obtain the air brake endorsement on their licence may do so through Ministry testing, the successful completion of an approved course at a community college op through their employer, provided the employer is within the Driver Certification Program. - APPLES for SALE - Macintosh - Courtland - Talman Sweet Delicious - Northern Spy - Empire WILLOWTREE ORCHARDS DURHAM RD. 8, PORT PERRY 1/4 Mile East of Epsom 985-9205
