26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 17, 1989 At Corner Five by John 'Wally' Nesbitt "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow" It's an old saying but incredibly appropriate for Canada's newest driving star, Ron Fellows. In the Country's most competitive racing showcase, The Players Ltd./G.M. Motorsport Series for Camaros and Firebirds, Fellows finished runner up in the Championship points race in each of the past two seasons but this year shed the Bridesmaid's image and claimed his first national title. And it was in a style that would be the envy of any Hollywood B-Movie script writer. Mosport hosted the final event of the season and Fellows entered the fray holding a very narrow 16 point advantage over his arch-rival, the dashing little frenchman, Richard Spenard. The point gap all but disappeared in the first qualifying session as Spenard captured the pole position and the 15 points that go along with the number one starting spot. Desperately wanting to hold on to his series lead, Fellows started his flying laps but in Corner One, a fast sweeping right hander, the Mississauga Racer encountered a section of slippery track which sent the Sunoco-sponsored Camaro slamming sideways into the guar- drail. After a series of horrific end over end tumbles the car final- ly came to rest on it's roof in the middle of the race track. Dazed and shaken, Fellows was brought into the track medical facility but emerged shortly after suffering from a vr : severely bruised elbow, battered ribs and what one person | £ i described as "Whiplash from the ankles up." As the field once more assembled on the grid there was fran- tic activity in the Spenard Camp as they tried to ready the spare car for the diminutive frenchman. But it was all for naught as the pack moved away with Spenard watching his chances for i '| a third title vanish from his vantage point on the pit wall. v 9 Fifteen laps later Robin Buck took the chequered flag but Al ; Fellows seventh place finish was enough to guarantee him the championship. : i \ ? In the past Ron has made several forays into the Trans-Am Series and has never finished out of the top five. In last year's race at Mosport, Fellows set a new lap record on his way to the pole position and eventually finished third in the race. When the green flag dropped on this year'sraceit was Ron's teammate Dorcey Schroeder that grabbed the early lead but it only took five laps on his home track for Fellows to prove his strength and talent and to slip by into top spot. Although the lead changed hands several times over the course of the fifty lap race, with eight tours remaining, Ron blew past the Camaro of Les Lindley and held on for his first ever victory in this truly prestigious series. A very tired and sore but ecstatic Fellows remarked that he had some doubts about the way the weekend would turn out after his disasterous start but concluded his podium speech: "Somebody had better pinch me. I must be dreaming!" With the Player's G.M. Series finished for the season Ron Fellows will now have some time to plot and plan next year's strategy. Hopefully he will get the Trans-Am ride he desires and sorichly deserves and hopefully, for the fans, he will still make his regular appearances locally for he truly is a jolly good Fellows!
