McMahon has them shaking By the time Kirk McMahon, the late Danny Kaye's startling look- alike, announced in his second act at Saturday night's Town Hall 1873 performance 'I'm shaking like a leaf....honestly,"' the sellout audiente was well warmed-up and entirely sym- patico with this dazzling imper- sonator. Although the phrase was borrowed from Kaye's own words during his famous London Palladium Concert, the "shak- ing" was entirely McMahon's own doing. Shaking...mugging...twit- ching...leaping...singing...even gargling -- one of the most energetic and magnetic perfor- mances ever seen on the Town Hall stage. And all pure Kaye --- a tribute to the original. Throughout a bouncy two-hour show in two acts, McMahon, a popular Oshawa native and graduate of Brock University, hurled himself through number after nostalgic Kaye number that many in the audience would have recalled from that famous com- ic's many films -- Anatole of Paris from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Five Pennies from the film of the same name, Malady in 4F from Up in Arms, The Gypsy Drinking Song from The Inspec- tor General and, of course, the wonderful 'pellet with the poison in the chalice from the palace/flagon with the dragon" sequence from The Court Jester -- unique Kaye routines all and most penned by Kaye's wife Sylvia Fine, whose permission allows McMahon to use this priceless material. The fast pace and doubletalk were especially entertaining. Besides McMahon's astonishing ability to recreate Kaye the performer, what truly enhances the credibility of this performance was the star's eeri- ly amazing physical resemblance to Danny Kaye. The gestures, ac- tions (choreographed by Vince Parnell, staged by David Walden - a star in his own performing right and composer of the title song "Shaking Like a Leaf") and costumes allowed the Kaye magic to live again, with the whole con- coction topped off by McMahon's personal infectious charm. Even the juvenile set in attendance squealed with delight at the recreation of Kay's version of the Emperor's New Clothes from Hans Christian Andersen, while earlier adults had become kids again as "Danny" coaxed them into accompanying him with a few '""diddle diddles," "zums," and "'ha-ha-ha's" as chorus. It is true that one or two mature showgoers were a trifle nonpluss- ed at the traditional classic vaudeville "drop-the-pants"' routine in Act one -- but that's show biz. Expect the unexpected -- and if you can't make 'em laugh, drop the pants. Meanwhile the pathos liberally injected to allow the audience in- timate views of Kaye's more private triumphs and tragedies gave the performance a dramatic edge cutting close to reality. Not a simple task. A well deserved ~ standing ovation ensued. Backed by "straight-man"' John Hughes, an award-winner in his own right, on piano (no easy job, and very well done), McMahon's loving tribute to Kaye proved to be a lively and effective season opener for Town Hall 1873. Addi- tional dialogue was furnished for the show by Laurie Pearce, stage management by Yvette LeClair. Following the show there was a "whole lotta shakin' goin' on" -- of hands, that is. The public is invited to attend the ar- tist's reception on Saturday, Oc- tober 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The artist will also be at the library on Saturday, October 21 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The fifteen pieces in the show are small to medium in size. Most were completed this past sum- mer. The emphasis is on pat- chwork and colour, utilizing variations of the Log Cabin and Rail Fence patterns. Other than several pieces with Christmas prints, fabrics with a non-country motif are used. There are no full- sized quilts, and there is no hand quilting. Although she teaches both stit- chery and quilting techniques, Mrs. Coates prefers to be known as a stitcher, not a quilter, due to her interest in the areas of fabric collage, needlelace and surface stitchery. The artist approaches each piece as an experiment, with some more successful than others. Two pieces examine the: use of the Fibonacci series as a basis for design. Other pieces echo earlier works, where the focus was on the mandala form. The circle in the square, and the medallion centre, using a square on point, gradually emerged as in- forming motifs in this show. Mrs. Coates is an active sup- porter of the arts, as the host of the weekly arts program, The Im- aginal Tree, on Rogers Cable 10, Oshawa and writer of of the twice- weekly Arts Diary in the Oshawa Times. In 1982, she received the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in the arts category. In September, the Oshawa Art Association presented her with an honorary life membership for her work in support of the arts. Mrs. Coates will be present at the library on Saturday, October 21, 1:30 - 4 p.m. and on Saturday, October 28, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. EARLY FALL SPECIALS effective to October 21, 1989 Co-ordinates for Kids ... ¢ Jumpsuits, Fleece, Knits country Lane EVANS UTR Hwy. 7A & High Street.
