22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 24, 1989 Back to back wins of 7-4 and 11-3 over Little Britain squad MoJacks hand Merchants a blow The Port Perry MoJacks got back into the win column over the weekend. And they did it in a big way with a pair of solid victories over the Little Britain Mer- chants. On Saturday evening, the Modacks journeyed north to take on the Merchants on their home turf. And they obviously found things to their liking as they came home with a 7-4 win. The next night back home at the Scugog Arena, the Mo- Jacks went on a scoring binge in the second period as they count- ed seven goals en route to an 11- 3 victory over the Merchants. After five games in the Cen- tral Junior C schedule, the Mo- Mens hockey Norton's Captures First Place! The first game of the day was a see-saw battle in which Ander- son's and Compton fought to a 4-4 tie, in Scugog Mens Hockey League. Counting for Compton were Dave Mann 2 goals, Wayne Fox 1 goal, 1 assist, and Carl Durward 1 goal, 1 assist. Other assists to Don MacDonald, Ron Hoogeboom and Bob Lee. Tallying for Anderson's were Larry Pilkey 2 goals, Jason Warner 1 goal, 1 assist, and Doug Suppelsa 1 goal. Assisting were Doug Bronson with 2 and Ken Lit- tle one. Game two was the battle of the basement in which Larocque Electric defeated J&D Carpentry 5-2 despite having only three ex- tras on the bench. Leading the way for Larocque were Rick Campbell 2 goals, 2 assists, Bill Haynes 2 goals, 1 assist, and Larry Jackson 1 goal. Jacks have a very respectable seven points on three wins, one tie and one defeat. To date, the team has scored 35 goals in the five games, while surrending just 19, which is a pretty fair indica- tion of the way the team has been playing defensively. A goals against average of under four per game is consid- ered well above average for Jun- ior C hockey. In the 7-4 victory in Little Britain, forward John Harman hit for a pair with singles going to Steve Connors, Chris Arse- nault, Len giacalone, Warren Geer and Kevin Gibson. Connors and Arsenault each had two assists in this one, Helping out were Brian Callery 3 assists and Peter Lane 2. Scorers for J&D were Dave Milton from Bill Bridge and Dale Bronson, and Ron Jeffrey from Bill Bridge and Roger Moase. The third game was a tight one as Blanchard's defeated Crandell's 3-0. Scoring for Blanchard's were Dan Horner, Dave Dickson, and Ivan Geer. Assists to Jim Duncan, Richie LeFort, Bruce Smith, Dan Carty, and Terry Bacall all with one. Pete Naumienko recorded the shut-out for Blanchard's. Game four was the battle for first place between Norton's and Sportsland with Norton's coming out on top by a score of 1-0. Getting the ice breaker for Nor- ton's was Mark Jobb from Mark Burger and Bill Van Camp. Recording the shut-out for Nor- ton's was Don Card playing an ex- cellent game between the pipes. Senior girls On October 20 a group of students held a Senior Girls High School Basketball tournament. The Tournament consisted of three teams, Port Perry, Ux- bridge and Anderson. The teams each played two games. Port's first game was against the Ux- bridge squad. The first half we struggled, had some difficulty coping. In the second half we came up with a stronger defen- sive game and a much better shooting record, but the buzzer went off to end the game and we lost to a score of 31-24 for Uxbridge. Port Perry squad had a fifteen minute break before it came up against the Anderson team. Anderson had some height com- pared to Port, but that didn't stop us from coming up and winning the game 42-38. place second The following game was bet- ween Uxbridge and Anderson. It was shocking to find Uxbridge down in this game, also surpris- ing to see Anderson in the lead at the end of the first half. Anderson played very well in the second half and taking the 46-26 win to put them in First place, and Port Perry following in behind with a Second place. Port Perry girls Senior Team travelled Oct. 19th to play the 2nd top team in Durham Region, Brock High School. Our girls played a strong, game under their basket but just couldn't come out on top with their shots. I must say it was a good game considering who we were playing but our girls tried their best and learned a few tricks to break the zone. The score in the game being 63-29 for Brock. Good effort Rebels. as did Brad Menzies. John Lally and Todd Taylor had one assist in the winning cause. For the Merchants, Duane Webster, Todd Malcolm, Kevin Bagshaw and Dave Holliday were the marksmen. Brad Bricknell turned in a olid game between the pipes for the MoJacks has he faced 30 shots. When the two teams re- turned to action 24 hours later at the Scugog Arena, the Mer- chants wasted little time get- ting on the board as Bagshaw potted on after just 14 seconds of play. But John Harman evened the score a minute later with an un-assisted effort. The goals came fast and fu- rious in the first 20 minutes as Todd Taylor, Jim Vernon and Paul Wilkins turned the red light. Bagshaw counted his sec- ond of the evening for the visi- tors. The second period turned into a nightmare for the Mer- chants as the MoJacks opened up the game for seven goals to take an 11-3 lead. And that's the way things stayed through the finel 20 min- utes in this game, which fea- tured a fair amount of heavy thumping. Warren Geer had two, with singles from Kevin Desrosiers, John Lally, Darren Lee, Bob Willetts, and Kevin Gibson. Steve Durham played a big role setting up the goals as he had four assists. Menzies, Har- man, Edmonston and Gibbens helped the cause with two as- sists each. Willetts, Geer, Gia- calone and Vernon each had one assist. The Modacks drifted 45 shots at the Merchant cage which was guarded by Matt McGill and Rob Harris. Brad Bricknell got his sec- ond straight start for the Mo- Jacks. He made some outstand- ing stops in the second half of the game. In the third especially, when the ModJacks took a slew of consecutive minor penalties, Bricknell was coming out to challenge shooters. He stayed on his feet. and took many shots on the pads t® prevent the Mer- chants from staging any kind of a comeback. He deserves full marks for the back to back vietories. SLAPSHOTS: Bricknell is like- ly to see plenty of action in the next few games as the MoJacks other regular goalie Dwayne Mackie went down in practise last week with aleginjury. Just how long Mackie will be out of the lineup depends on a medical assessment this week. Ray Doyle from the Port Midget squad was back-up to Bricknell in both weekend games against the Merchants. The MoJacks got some fine work from their penalty killing units over the weekend, as the team surrendered just two pow- er play goals. The team has a tough schedule coming up this week. Tonight (Oct. 24) the MoJacks journey to Ajax for a game with the Axemen. This Thursday night, the MoJacks host Lake- field Chiefs with an 8:30 faceoff at the Scugog Arena. And on Sunday evening (Oct. 29) the Ajax Axemen are in town with faceoff set for 7:30 PM. The Axemen are a rough and tumble crew, and as for the Lakefield Chiefs who are off to a slow start this season, no doubt they'll be looking for a little re- venge after the ModJacks thumped them 9-3 back on Oc- tober 8. Scugog Soccer president Colin Dodd (at left) turns over a cheque for $2500 to Ron Cosway, chairman of the building committee for the new club-house/washrooms. The money was from the Scugog Soccer Club. Mr. Cosway said plans for the new facility at the soccer fields are progressing, and the target is to have the facility ready next summer. Atoms Bs win it It was an exciting game with a great finish Thursday night in Port against Cobourg. Port out-shot Cobourg 16 shots to 8 and won the game with one se- cond to go. Cobourg scored 3'% minutes into the game to go ahead 1-0. Kevin Hobbs received the pass, went in and shot on net. Derek Leeming was in position for the rebound which he picked up and fired it in to tie the game up. Cobourg scored to go ahead 2-1. Halfway into the second period, Chris Drury made a great check in front of his net and carried the puck all the way up the side to end it with a beautiful shot past the far side of the goalie to tie it up. Robert Gracie prevented several shots on his goalie by making one remarkable check in last second after another. Trevor Smith made another end to end rush and after 3 rebound shots Shane Norton fired it in with one second to go to win the game. Port played their next league game in Bowmanville Saturday. Bowmanville out-shot Port 20 to 12. Paul Shrigley played a strong game between the pipes. Jason Hopkins carried the puck up the ice and took a hard wrist shot scoring the first goal of the game. Bowmanville scored 3 unanswered goals. Port made a lot of plays but couldn't get the shots on net showing their spirit that they don't give up, Mike Morden let go a good shot. Shane Norton was in perfect position for the rebound and scored Port's 2nd goal. I ----"
